Okay, it works great. Thanks to everyone for the help. Now, one last
question. How do you add it to whatever you add it to in order to have it
start up with windows?

Put a NewsProxy shortcut icon in your startup folder.

I think I did that. I clicked on "pin to start menu". Other than that, if I
do a search, I have many startup folders.

I can't remember how I did in using XP. Go to Help for your operating
system and see how to do it. I think El Castor posted how to do it at
one time.

I have XP, and there are three startup folders. Two are utterly
useless to me, but I put it in the one where I already had
startup icons that were automatically put in there for things I
had installed and said "yes" when I was asked "include in
startup"? It's a good idea to keep track of what's in your
startup folder. I don't use my scanner much, but it really slows
down the boot if it's in the startup folder, so I disabled the
pre-load.
There's some other startup stuff that comes with Windows
that you don't need too. I have a program to control what
actually gets started up, called "Startup Cop", which I
got from somewhere, perhaps from:
It allows you to permit, deny, or remove things that get
loaded at startup. I've never used the "remove" option,
there's no need to remove something doesn't start up, and
I just might screw something up if I removed it.
All that I allow to start up now are three things associated
with my DSL connection, Zone Alarm and AVG to watch
for viruses and vandals trying to invade my computer,
News Proxy, and two other little things I like, CapsUnlock
(to disable the CapsLock key and also "overtype" mode),
and Maxmem (to put a little icon in my tray showing how
much memory I'm using and also allow me to refresh the
memory by clearing out space not released by any
programs after I closed the programs).
Microsoft stuff that I don't allow to start are Microsoft
Messenger (MSMSGS), Microsoft Works Calendar
Reminders, and Microsoft Works Update Detection.
From Dell, I don't allow Dell Alert to start up. I suppose
it would only bust in from time to time to try to sell me
something.
Other miscellaneous stuff, that I put in myself or that
got loaded automatically, which I don't allow to start,
include the abovementioned scanner stuff. If I need
the scanner, it starts up just about as fast as if I'd
preloaded it when I need it.
There's also a toolbar for my Earthlink DSL but I
don't need it and it looks annoying floating around on
the right-hand side of my screen.
There's also "Real Tray" (which never needed to
be loaded at startup, but I don't even use Real Player
anymore since I have a substitute that doesn't "call
home").
Roxio CD's "Drag to Disk" also doesn't need to be
preloaded but I don't ever use that function anyway.
There are a couple of other things, some of which
came with my Dell, some which automatically installed
themselves with some software.
All told, there are 24 items that want to load
themselves at startup, and I only need to run 8 of
them. Don't disable anything if you don't know
what it is, though. I do have one thing that I've
disabled but don't know what it is, but I guess I
would have found out what it was before I
disabled it.
