What Is A Friend?

Jerry Okamura...
We often talk about which country is a friend of the United States. It
occurs to me that there is not a whole lot of difference between the
relationship one has with our brothers and sisters, the relationship we have
with someone else who we call our best friend, and friendship between
nations. That is, the person/country is your best friend, when they are
still your friend when everyone else has abandoned you.

El Castor...
Personally, I can't relate to friendship between nations any more than
I can understand the "friendship" between California and Iowa. That
said, if the United States has a best friend, I would lean towards the
UK. Several prime ministers have been closely associated with the US,
we've been through two world wars with them, and they are, after all,
the "mother country". A distant second on our friends list would, I
suppose, be Canada, but with a friend like Canada, who needs enemies?

Rita...
I thought you would say Israel is the best friend of the U.S.
Surprised you did not. You criticize the UK far more than you do
Israel.

The UK government has certainly followed the lead of the U.S. but
its population as a whole is not all that enchanted with U.S.
policies. There are anti-U.S. demonstrations there from time to
time. I doubt there are any in Israel. I don't think the Brits are
hostile toward individual Americans, just our foreign policy.
