Business Week says Mexico has 450,000 engineering students compared

Lee K...
I had no idea they needed that many people to make boots.

to 370,000 in the USA (which has almost triple the population).
In the print version the graph shows Mexican enrollment doubling
over the past decade while the US fell, due to the tech crash.

I suspect the Mexican enrollment figures include trade school and
associate degrees,
which the US counts separately. Plus Mexico is like many Euro/Asian
countries where the
generic college program for males is "engineering", while that is
"business" for US males. But even discounting for this, the
enrollments are impressive.

Now if more engineers would immigrate, rather than farmers ...

Yeah, I saw some of those 'engineers' working on lawn crew this
morning.

This is no joke. I think there was a piece on NPR last week about the
education of illegal aliens from Mexico. They said that about 6% of them
have college degrees and that what drove them to the US was the loss of
value of the peso and the mexican financial crisis of the 1990s.

Amazing. Not since I met a Cuban engineer have I been reminded that
they have good people from south of the border. In practice, IIRC for
engineers, they police the immigrants pretty thoroughly for status.
Most of them were in graduate schools awaiting a green card on an H1B
visa. But almost all mexican engineers in US employment are Mex-Amer.
