Nixon, D....
Elk; and Group;

Yes, I've read much regarding private enterprise vs. government in regard to
what is generally good for our population and our overall economy and
identity as a nation.
In general, I have almost always agreed with the Conservative side, I agree
with almost all of your points.

However, we are now faced with an unprecedented threat to our economy, our
nation, and our culture. I won't describe the threats; you know them as
well as I.

An entirely new way of viewing certain rights, privileges, and yes, even
COMMODITIES, is very much in order ----- particularly in a nation at war for
its very existence. We understood these things in the WW-II; they are less
emphatic nowadays.

But rather than me raging on about oil needing to be nationalized let me
present just one clear example of another situation which might give you
some food for thought; at least it will give you a different aspect of that
situation and just might give rise to other alternatives regarding
petroleum. As follows:

1. We are now faced with an immigration situation the outcome of which will
have a drastic and long/long-term disastrous impact on our nation, our
culture, and our standard of living. It is not going well, the outcome is
very much in question.

Jerry Okamura...
Think about this. If there was no immigrants allowed to enter this country,
what would happen to this country? Who is going to pay for the bill? For
instance the Social Security Trustees say that in the future there will be
fewer workers supporting each person on Social Security. With some
population projections predicting that the population of the United States
will decline, if there was zero immigration, what would be the impact of
that trend? Would the number receiving the benefits be even greater than
the ones who are paying for the benefits?

2. Currently, what you would call "private interests", i.e., very large
corporations, very large agri-businesses, and the bankers that support them,
ARE IN TOTAL CONTROL OF IMMIGRATION INTO THIS NATION. The administration
of Cowboy George is sold out to the
pro-immigration/slave-labor/welcome-wagon interests. These "private
interests" care nothing about the general welfare of our legal citizens,
they care nothing about our continued viability/identity as a nation, they
care nothing about the wages and living standards of the lower levels of our
legal working people, they care ONLY about adding $Billions to their bottom
line and to thus enable their top Execs., Officers, and Directors to become
multi-Billionnaires so they and their families can retire to their nation of
choice in the future in a grand and luxurious way.

Jerry Okamura...
I am sorry, I do not agree. I do not see that either party is promoting any
drastic changes in how we control immigration into this nation.

The laws of our country are quite clear regarding immigration. They do need
much tightening up but they are clear to anyone who can understand English.
Our "private interests" cause them to be FLAGRANTLY violated each and every
day; adding $Billions to their profits while ruining our social services
system, our public-health system, and our education system. AND, our
government by the way !

Jerry Okamura...
You cannot ruin anything, if government had not offered these services in
the first place.

So - - - - - tell me, do you really want something as critical to our
existence as gasoline has become to remain in the hands of your precious
"private interests"?? I don't think so, Elk; I don't think so . . . . .
. . . . .

Jerry Okamura...
Yes

Just as water, sewers, roads, electricity, are ESSENTIAL to our way of life,
gasoline has become the same.

Jerry Okamura...
No. Water is essential because without water you die. Sewers are not
essential, becuase you can survive without government financed sewer
systems, I should know, I am not on the government supplied sewer system.
Roads only make moving from one place to another easier and more efficient.
People will figure out a way to get from one place to the other, regardless
of whether roads are developed by government or not. No comment on
electricity, but the world not only survived but thrived long before the
invention of electricity....though it certainly makes life a whole lot
easier to live....

I could describe other examples but let us stick to this simple old
"GASOLINE for the Working Class" situation. Do you really want that to
remain in control of entities that owe no allegiance to this Land of the
Free and Home of the Brave? I know that I cannot change your mind entirely
in this regard but I would hope that you might ponder the question from a
different viewpoint.

Ben Franklin was a good ol' boy for sure ( I think some in this newsgroug
knew him personally).
But, we live in strange times under unique threats. It is high time for
some new Ben Franklins.................

There are two main categories of economic philosophies:
* The spectre of economic prosperity motivates people to unbound riches.
* The spectre of economic deprivation motivates people to sufficient
riches.

McDave; an old, decrepit, and senile, "spectre" from the
1930's...............

cramerj58...
Who is "we" - no don't tell me - you are russian.

===================================================

Alan Lichtenstein...
Do you realize that what you're proposing with regard to gasoline, is
( gasp ) SOCIALISM?

Don't tell me that a die-in-the-wool reactionary is actually promoting
SOCIALISM?

Nixon, D....
============================================================

Allen, it is way beyond time that we rid ourselves of the old ideas of Left
and Right, Conservative and Liberal, etc........ These are relics that we
can no longer burden ourselves with. We as the legal citizens of this
nation need to put as foremost in our minds what is good for the continued
sovereignty and viability of our homeland and, somehow, elect a government
that is of the people, by the people, and for the people. Currently, we
have an incompetent, confused, mess. In times of war special, immediate,
regulations, agencies, need to be created as needed. Let us not become a
part of the "Enemy Within" !! We want to be no part of that, do we,
Allen??

McDave

Alan Lichtenstein...
Well, I'm glad you finally came to those realizations. In point of
fact, for the most part, I agree with you. I don't go as far as you do
though, and suggest Socialism, although it might not be a bad idea. I
believe there are steps we can take short of that, such as rationing,
excess profits taxes and price controls. I couldn't resist getting a
sarcastic comment, though. You must admit, that the extreme right-wing
has frequently relied on that bugaboo as a general response, as if
somehow, if you apply what is perceived to be a negative label, that
doing so somehow makes what you're doing correct.
