Only 30 bucks for this wind up radio/flashlight.

I recently bought a couple of those LED flashlights -- the kind
without batteries, that you shake. A steel slug slides back and forth
inside a copper coil and charges a capacitor. It works remarkably
well, and the capacitor retains a charge for months at a time. They
are dimmer than a regular flashlight, but always work, and do the job.
I would never go back to a battery powered light.

That was the fifties and I won the rocket shaped radio from a gumball
machine.
My cel phone has an FM radio.

If you can't find your wind-up when you need it, remember that you have
a fine, fully charged battery-operated portable radio out in the garage
(in your car!).

I certainly learned that lesson. That is exactly what I ended up dong. But
that is not a good idea for the long term it seems to me.

Our power went off for about three days during the big East Coast
power outage and the car is only useful for a brief period.
