Madge...
OK, so we tried the bowl of water in front of the fan - I swear it worked.
Son was highly amused, as in
"Why do we have a bowl of water in front of the fan when we don't have a
dog?"

Pointed out it was to catch flies / moths - we had 5 died bodies at that
stage.....

I liked BoyPete's suggestion of using a frozen cool box
thingie......unfortunately, no-where to 'safely' put a fan in bedroom last
night ("No, I am not clearing dressing table / too tired + it will be in my
face")
Makes me wonder why someone hasn't invented / designed a stand alone fan
that has a 'cage bit' in front where one can put one of those frozen

pmj...
They have!
I've seen several Fan/Cooler type things that have provision for
a Water (or Ice?) Container in them

blocks??

Wish I could design stuff........

Fortune to be made, I am sure

pmj...
Yep!!!

I used to sell Electrical stuff & *every* Summer, there was a stream
of people wanting to buy a Fan of some kind - *any* kind...

I would drive to another County, to get a Van load of them, whenever
I found a Wholesaler with them in stock. [*1]

I always wondered what they did with the ones that they bought in
previous Years!

I have had several (reasonable sized) Oscillating Desk Fans now for
10, 15 or even 20 Years & they still work fine.

But if you get stuck with any left in stock when the weather breaks,
then you can *lose* a fortune as well!
:-(

David C....
The commercial "Air Coolers" aren't too expensive, app. £45 upwards in
Argos or £200+ for genuine portable Air Conditioners.

AC running costs are high, but air coolers just have motors driving
the fan & the endless-belt wick, so probably no more than 100 watts.

They work best with cold water, mine came with freezer packs to be
dropped into the water compartment.

IMVHO, they work quite well & are worth the pennies!
