My 84 year old friend has an *R* registration VW Polo. He's just 'phoned me

to say the car wouldn't start yesterday morning - seemed to be a duff
battery - well it is the original one so about 8 years old and he only ever
does short journeys. Anyhow he put the battery on charge overnight. By
morning it was charging at around 1 Amp, so there should have been a charge
of at least 18 Amperehours in the battery by then. Anyhow the engine still
wouldn't turn over so he rang the main dealer - about 1½ miles away. They
said they couldn't come out but gave him the mobile number of a breakdown
guy they use, to get the car down to them. He arrived very quickly and
started the car immediately with his portable battery and jump leads.
Cost - £53. He advised my friend that the cheapest thing for him to do
would be to drive the car to the nearest Halfords and get a battery there.
At 84, my friend was very concerned that he may become stranded, so the
breakdown guy took the car on the back of his lorry to the main dealer's at
no extra charge. After a couple of 'phone calls this afternoon, no one
had been able to look at the car and they were saying it probably wouldn't
be ready until sometime next week. Remember they know this customer, his
age and the fact he is very reliant on his car. Also he bought the car
new from them and has had them service and MOT it ever since. Later this
afternoon a neighbour phoned the dealer again and said a few words - it
transpires the main dealer hasn't got a battery in stock that will fit the
Polo. He (the neighbour) offered to get a battery from Halfords and take
it to the car and fit it himself - they said they couldn't allow that.

If that's the way they deal with all their customers I'm very surprised that
there are any VWs sold in Sheffield these days.

Awful :-((
I have a skoda fabia and the skoda garage in Aberdeen is the only dealers I
have come across where the "service" staff are as keen to please as the
"sales" staff are. Brilliant.

I have a 1997 Toyota Celica, and my local garage who were the main dealers
up to 2 years ago were and still are excellent. Fortunately they are in
walking distance - about 1 mile - so I've had no problems so far.

And here's the follow up:
A battery was bought from Halfords (£39) taken to the VW dealer and fitted
by the neighbour - only took 10 minutes - and all is fine. The girl in the
main dealer office told them that they'd done well, since they would have
charged about £140. Even more unbelievable. I suppose they would have
checked all the relevent leads from battery to starter motor and alternator,
and the alternator itself, just to make sure the battery was being charge
OK.
