BT promises 8Mbps broadband to 99.6 % of UK homes and businesses
by 31 March.
(Subject to 'ifs' and 'buts'.)

Stephen Baker...
Tiscali are running MaxDSL trials on currently enabled exchanges (here -
their plans for wide scale implementation, I imagine they will plan
based around their own LLU schedule i.e my exchange is due MaxDSL
31/03/06 but will get Tiscali LLU 01/07/06, so they might offer me 8MB
MaxDSL as a stepping stone to their 16MB- 24MB product later in the year.

datasmog...
They are not ifs and buts. You quoted out of context.
The 5300 exchanges due for upgrade by March 31 serve 99.6% of the
population.
It goes on to say:
"While such speeds are highly dependent on distance from exchanges, BT
estimates that 78 per cent of its phone lines should support broadband
at line rates of 4Mbps and above, with 6Mbps and above available to more
than 42 per cent.

For those living or working close to their telephone exchange, line
rates up to the maximum 8Mbps should be achievable."

So 8Mbps may only be available to significantly less than 40% of the
population.

Presumably the other 0.4% will be left with the wet string they
currently use.

Saxman...
You are spot on with this. It was the same with the mobile telephone
companies and their hype, always quoting the 'population' thing.

I remember a certain mobile company whose area initially was inside the M25
and they used this 'population' hype.

It appears to me at the moment that broadband suppliers are trying to gun
each other down with numbers.

Before Christmas Wanadooronron had a large roadside ad in Spalding
talking up 8Mbs broadband for (insert small figure here, I can't recall
what it was). This in a town where no-one can get more than 2Mbs and
anyone outside rock throwing distance of the exchange is down to 1Mbs or
less. I'm not holding my breath in the hope of seeing much of an
improvement in April.

Saxman...
I'll believe it when I see it! I can get 1Mbps now, but neighbour can't
get it at all. BT said maybe in the next year. Another neighbour has
512Mbps. We only live about a mile from a town with 300,000 people!

sam...
Are they connected via their BT lines?

Saxman...
They are.

Also, some ISPs only contract to deliver speeds of 512kbps in their
standard packs.

Saxman...
They say we should get 2mbps.

I've been waiting since the 22nd February for BT to answer a formal written
complaint that I sent to them regarding billing and loss of my broadband
service.

According to the 'Times' last Saturday, it only took BT 3 months to sort
out a similar problem.

Jeff Gaines...
I haven't spotted any news about which ISP's will supply DSL Max yet,
certainly nothing on Demon's web site, and nothing mentioned in the
Demon group.

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
Plusnet have said something about speeds up to 8Mbps after 31/03/2006.

Aries...
do we have to apply for that do you know ?

Rabbit...
Yeah but it all depends on the variables, like if you live next door to the
exchange :-)
