Each time I log on I am told I have 'one unread mail message'
datasmog...
|
By "Log on" do you mean to the internet? And what is giving this
pmj...
|
Now, that's an interesting point!!!
It shows how different people can read the same Post in
different ways!
:-)
When I read donut's Post I read what she said as "Logging on to
windoze"!
Cos I know that the standard WinXP "Welcome" (Logon) Screen shows
a line of Information saying "x Unread Messges", below each User
Account Name.
But, yes, there are other things that people refer to as
"Logging on", aren't there?
& there are various other things (such as M$N Messenger) which *also*

message, MS Messenger?
pmj...
|
& if she has her M$N messenger Set to Automatically Load & Run at
windoze Boot up (as I know some people do) & if it's Set to
Automatically "Sign in" (which again, I know some people have it Set
to do), then that can give a similar Message - though only if it's
also Set to "Check for new Hotmail Messsges" & if you do have
a Hotmail Account Set up in it..
|
Do you have a Hotmail account, and do you use that hotmail address as
the login for msn?
If the answer to that is yes then you may have an unread message in your
pmj...
|
& I know that some people also have their M$N Messenger Set to Log
on (Sign in) Automatically, when OutLook Express Opens as well - even
if it isn't Set to Load & Run (& Sign in) at Boot up.
I'd be interested to hear (see) donut's Reply to your Queries/
suggestion about it possibly being Hotmail/MSN Messenger that is
showing the Messages, if she didn't actually mean the WinXP "Unread
Message Count" thing on the "Welcome" Screen, that I assumed she was
talking about.

Hotmail inbox.
|
when I look there are no unread mail messages in my 'in box'.
I think this has happened because one of the mails I received was from
someone unknown to me and I deleted it without opening - but that's a numpty
guess! Can anyone tell me how to stop the message please.

That "x Unread Mail Message(s)" Notification thingy on the WinXP
"Welcome" Screen does seem to be a source of quite a few probs...
It's part of the way that WinXP works - trying to be "Helpful", but
(as with so many things like that), all that sort of "2nd Guessing" that
it does often end sup Confuzzling things, rather than clarifying them.
:-(
WinXP often gets the "Unread Message" count wrong, unfortunately.
There's no way in the GUI (Graphical User Interface) of WinXP to ReSet
that Unread Message Count - the details are stored in the Registry,
so you would need to Edit the Registry to sort it out.
There are (I think) some Utilities (such as Tweak UI) that will do the
necessary Registry Editing, but you can do it yourself, using Regedit...
Using Regedit, you can look at (& Delete) the stuff to do with that
Unread Message Count thing...
Start>Run regedit [OK]
Navigate your way down through the Tree on the left, to the Key
called: UnreadMail - that's at...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
\Software
\Microsoft
\Windows
\CurrentVersion
\UnreadMail
Under that Registry Key, you will see some (or maybe only one) Sub-Keys
One for each eMail Address (Account) that is Set up in OutLook Express,
or OutLook or any other Mail Client Program that supports the Feature.
In each eMail Address/Account Sub-Key, there are 3 Values...
Application
MessageCount
TimeStamp
You can either Edit the "MessageCount" Value (Set it to 0)
or just Delete all those Values, in each Sub-Key, or you can just
Delete the Sub-Key for the Address(es)/Account(s) that you want to
ReSet.
That will Clear (ReSet) the Unread Message Count thing - & it will
start again from fresh.
If you aren't sure about any of the above, Post back for Clarification.

Have you tried clearing mail from your ISP's webmail?
pmj...
|
Doing that won't actually have any effect on that "Unread Message
Count" thingy, that WinXP has.
What it is showing is (what it thinks is) the "Unread Message Count"
in the Mail Client(s) on the User's *System* (the User's Installations
of things like OutLook & OutLook Express) & *not* anything at all to
do with what's on the (ISP's) Mail *Server*.
The Details are stored in the Registry & WinXP looks in there when
it Boots up (regardless of whether or not the PC is Connected to the
Internet & completely separate from whatever is in the Mailbox on the
ISP's Server) & then shows the Information on the welcome Screen.
I've Posted some details of how to ReSet it in my other Reply in
this Thread.

Hi Pete - yep I can delete my deleted items folder entries but I do not know
how to delete from ISP's webmail - sorry but thanks anyway.

To delete from your ISP's webmail you go to your ISP's homepage and there is
usually somewhere where you can `check my e-mails`
clicl on that and it takes you to ISP's webmail. You probably have to log in
with your e-mail address and password then it shows what you have in your
mailbox
then you can read, delete or send mails from there. That is how it is in
Tiscali!
