Anyone can clear my mind on setting up a new wireless router.

There's a useful looking guide here:
er2110.shtml?f9_session=9c1a784aab88a794fc74e523153ef28f
(watch for line wrap)
I've not come across a router that needs setting up via a wireless
connection before, the usual recommendation is to do it via a wired
connection but I live and learn :-)

I'll do most things for a laugh so I'll give it a go. The installation
phase seems to be all about setting up the WEP and establishing a
broadband connection and then it is just a simple process of making a
physical connection.

Well that side hasn't been enabled yet so it's not tested but I'm not
expecting any trouble with that side. Should I have said that? :-)

Well getting my system unit out if its location in my office and
connecting the ethernet cable will take longer than actually getting
this set up.
I'll not install the USB Wifi at all in the first instance so we'll have
nothing clouding the issue, I wait to be amazed :-)

Failed, badly.
Well not quite as bad as that - I set it up without a wireless
connection but could not connect to my ISP PlusNet. So I resigned my
self to going as per instructions. I got to the same point and no
connection.
Annoyingly I was supplying the wrong username so you can set this up
without going down the wireless route first.
I am connected via a wireless connection at present but I'm about to
reset everything and go down the ethernet set up. Not quite as I'd planned.
It's a bit more stable and I'm syncing at 6112 kbps, the best so far,
but only getting 1.83 mbps download rate. I'm happy that the connection
is more stable, just one drop out to date instead of every 2 - 3 minutes.
It may whoosh yet!

Jeff,
Thanks for the link it concurs with the information I got with the
router and like you I was thinking that the wired connection would have
been favoured for setting it up. I'm just not ready to get the laptop
just yet as I'm waiting for the right deal to come along and I'm in no
immediate rush.
My instructions say you *must* configure it via a wireless connection
which is fine if you have one. That's why I bought the USB dongle; my
concern was setting it up from a wireless connection from my desktop
then swapping that for a wired connection, I wondered if there would be
some undesirable conflict here. In my own mind I can't think why there
should be, I suppose I'll just have to dive in and try.

True
But my issue is do you think there be any probs setting it up on the=20
desktop with a WiFi and then getting rid of that and using the ethernet=20
cable on the same machine. I can Wifi enable my desktop to set up the=20
router with the USB dongle.

Yes this bit worries me as they make a big thing about definitely not=20
setting it up from and ethernet cable then say things that seem to=20
contradict that.

I'll just set up the Wireless USB adapter dongle and then just try it I=20
think.
Many thanks and fingers crossed.

I bought a Voyager 2110 a week or two back the idea being to connect it
to my desktop via a cable to the Ethernet Adapter and then to purchase a
laptop later to connect to it via a wireless connection.
The driver behind this was PlusNet upgrading all accounts to a faster
transfer speed. Currently I have a USB modem with a max throughput of 8
mbps. I reckoned this would be sailing too close to the wind if I was
upgraded to 8 mbps. And in any case things are moving on so I thought my
hardware needed upgrading.
However, I now find that installation / configuration should be carried
out using a wireless connection initially then to connect any cable
connections afterwards. (You always find the things out after the event)
So now I have a wireless router that I can't use. So I've bought a
wireless USB adapter to get me going hopefully. The thought was connect
the PC wirelessly via the adapter, set it up and then make a wired
connection and remove the USB adapter.
I just wondered if there are any obvious pitfalls those learned ones
amongst you can see.

Will be watching this thread with interest as I have just saved myself
£7 pm by getting BT to offer me the same top option 4 which I am paying
£29.99 pm ATM for 2.2mbps. They throw in a free wifi router to enable up
to 8mbps. Don't know what make the router is so Jeff's link may or may
not apply..
But I guess that I shall need some help once it arrives.
