What do you like about your home and/or location?

Frederick Williams...
Thale Sap.

~~seadancer~~...
What does "Thale Sap" mean?

Frederick Williams...
It is a lake near Songkla in southern Thailand. I used to live on an
old Bermuda rigged cutter(*) nearby.

(* Called a sloop in the States, I think.)

Lovely verse... who is the author?

Frederick Williams...
It is from Tennyson's In Memoriam.

~~seadancer~~...
Thanks for the answers, Frederick.
Yes, lakes are always lovely places to be near or on.
What brought you to Thailand?

Frederick Williams...
I'm sorry, I didn't answer your question of how I came to be _in_
Thailand. I was travelling in (what would now be called) my gap year
(I'm not sure that we had a name for it back then). I had taken the
hippy trail to India and decided to keep going to Singapore. The
university which had offered me a place put it back by one year and off
I went.

I searched the web for to learn more about the poem. I found the
following at about.com:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"In 1833, Alfred Lord Tennyson's closest friend died.
He was Arthur Hallam, fiance to Tennyson's sister.
"In Memoriam"(1850) is an elegy written in honor of Hallam.
It's made up of 133 poems--all written over a 17-year period."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I also found:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Alfred Tennyson, In Memoriam... 1850.
The most famous, most influential, and most widely-quoted
of Tennyson's longer poems was also one of the most personal.
In Memoriam is both an elegy to Tennyson's college friend Arthur
Henry Hallam, who died suddenly in Vienna in 1833, and a prolonged
meditation on religious belief, modern science, and the significance
of the individual life. All the early editions, like this one, were bound
in purple, the color of mourning, rather than in Tennyson's usual green
cloth."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's fun to find these little tidbits.

Jackie gave me the idea for this thread when I read today's GMT thread.
One of the best things about our location is that it's near stores!
At our summer cottage we are practically stranded even though the
scenery is gorgeous. Not being near the stores gets to you after a while...
you start to feel disconnected from civilization.
How about you... what do you like about where you live?

andon...
I can afford it

Grannie Annie...
I'm down in the south-east corner, the sea is about 6 miles in three
directions. We are in the middle of the forest with no immediate
neighbours. Birds singing; squirrels scurrying for acorns, foxes,
badgers, horses, sheep. It's very pretty this time of year, there are
chesnuts and hazelnuts in the forest too. The trees are a beautiful
colour. I'll make the most of this season as the winters are a bit
messy. Mud everywhere, snow, slush, ugh. The summer and spring make
it all worthwhile though.
I'm lucky to be able to drive as the nearest stores are in our village,
which is one and a half miles away. I tend to use farm shops and other
little shops rather than supermarkets.
I've lived in the city when I was a child but I much prefer the
countryside.

Derek F...
Ask me next year ! We are about to move. Soon we will be in Eastbourne and
200 yards from the sea.
Derek.

~~seadancer~~...
Good luck, Derek. That sounds grand!

Derek F...
It costa lotta Grands :-) We would have been there weeks ago but for the
vendors slowcoach lawyer.
Derek

~~seadancer~~...
I know all about slow lawyers. When we bought our
house, the lawyer kept telling me: "We're moving forward."
That was his standard answer when I would call to find out
when the closing on the house would be. We were exhausted
from the stress of just waiting for things to "move forward".
Seems the seller's lawyer employed only a small staff of
personnel (if he had any!) and he wasn't about to rush himself.
Hope things move forward for you quickly.

Derek F...
We received the contract and a copy of the lease today. Our lawyer had been
waiting for a copy of the lease signed in 2002 since October 3rd after
having been sent the 1959 one in error.
Derek.

Jackie...
We will soon be near neighbours Derek - we live in Bexhill!

~~seadancer~~...
I wish I knew where all these places were in the UK.
I don't have time to find a map right now.
We're getting ready for our Thanksgiving holiday here in the USA.

Derek F...
Get a copy of Autoroute and trace us all. Happy Holiday.
Derek.

~~seadancer~~...
Thanks for the wishes and the suggestion, Derek.
But first I have to get the house in order for Thanksgiving.
I'm taking a little rest from the housework right now.
I find the Sisu very relaxing and pleasant when I have time.

Derek F...
Come for tea one day. My brother in law who lives in Kent often visits
Bexhill... he likes the Fish 'n Chips there.
Derek.

Ali...
I'm near enough the coast to visit whenever I want; I can walk on wild
moorland within an hour - walking all the way, and only crossing one road
at road level; I can be on the riverbank in twenty minutes walk; there's a
supermarket within easy walking distance (I do lot of walking), and all
the high street stores and a good selection of independants within easy
reach.

I've lived here all my life (so far :^), except for when I was away), and
my family have been here nearly as long as the town.

And when I come home, I can lock the front door, close the curtains, turn
on the fire, and come on here with you lot.

John in Cornwall...
Cornwall UK
I like the smell of Farms and the sweet smell in the air down here in
Cornwall
I like the stress free way of life down here - people often stop for a chat
in the shops - don't seem to matter if there are other folks waiting to be
served... you often get asked "Do you need anything else" ? and people seem
genuinely interested in who you are. You not just a number.
I like the Village life and the way everyone turns out for the Village
fete - every body joins in the fun.
I like the Sea - the power is awesome at times ... when it thunders against
the rugged coastline it seems like the whole cliff's are going to give
way.... and then in the summer that very same sea is calm and gentle and
allows the tourist's, young and old - to take a ride on it's back...
It's cold and it's damp and it's downright lonely sometimes - but I wouldn't
change it - cos I love it.
John on the Moor at Bodmin

Mike Tullett...
Having such lovely views as this on my doorstep.

~~Linda~~...
What an interesting thread. I've enjoyed looking at all reasons and my own
were originally the peace and quiet of the countryside but with all the
building in the South East in recent years, we're beginning to think about
moving :-(

andon...
As an ex-pat I can tell you that you will get homesick very quickly.
If you move to the right place it is likely that will also get very
much richer too :-)
Every other person in South Lincs talks with a Suvern accent

noreen...
Well Sea i don't have anywhere else to go !! but love my little flat .
I live near to a reservoir which gives me lovely walks ,and scenery .
Buses very near and regular (don't have a car)and free.
But would love to have a summer cottage ;-))))

Wrinklie One =?iso-8859-1?Q?=A9?=...
My wife lives there :-)

Mike Clayton...
Well, I live in a lovely old village. Many of the buildings are quite
old and hark back to the days of weaving in the home, as apposed to mill
weaving. We are very well served by buses, a few minutes from a major
motorway, we have a village library, shops, and a museum. Best of all
the village is located in the wonderful county of Yorkshire.
