Troy's Human...
Very pleased so far - one problem though :-(

The monitor is absolutely superb - definition super - amazing for pictures.
*But* it's *much* too bright. Brightness default is 100 and I've reduced
that to zero. Still Much too bright and can't watch it for long with a
white background (as in my newsreader).

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
I found that with my new TFT so reduced the brightness - Now at 50 -
You'll get used to it TH

Troy's Human...
But I've reduced my brightness to *ZERO* and it's still much too bright!!
(the scale is from zero to 100 - 100 being the brightest).

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
That's what my gnr TFT is, and yes it too seemed too brigh when set at
zero. There didn't appear to be much difference between the zero and 100
settings so I just set it half way. But I'm quite used to it now. I wonder
if gnr make the ones Dell use then?

I most certainly will *not* get used to it - my eyes will pack up long
before that happens. BTW - I've asked a few people to confirm that I'm not
imagining it and they all say it's way way too bright. I've also used other
TFTs from time to time and none have been like this.

Phoned Dell this morning and spent a long time going through various stuff
- opened up the case etc. I drew the line when the engineer asked me to
remove the video card. He finally agreed that my monitor must be faulty.
Dell are sending a new one next week and will collect the old one.

Well done Dell. Didn't have to wait too long for a reply. I'm more than
satisfied so far :-)

You can change background colour (and others) in Settings General Fonts

times till i got it right . No way could i have got used to it ;-))))

& Colours

Peirrepoint...
TH,

Depending on the settings available on the monitor, you could try setting
it up the way I was taught to set tellys up.

1) reduce colour/brightness/contrast to 0

2) bring up contrast/brightness until you get a good black & white picture

3) increase colour to a level that suits you

This works best if you use a picture with skin-tones, ie a good family photo
or similar. On tellys, I usually tune to a channel that is showing a studio
shot, news24 or similar.

That great TH , but as you say they should have known about that ! and you
have no reason to feel guilty at all ;-)))
Thanks Pat but perhaps I should explain a bit more. I have 2 methods of
connecting my monitor to the PC (both cables supplied) -

1. VGA
2. DVI

To start with I tried VGA - this gave me brightness *and* contrast
controls. Quite good picture and I managed to reduce the glare by reducing
the contrast as well as the brightness. Quite good picture but not
excellent + problems when scrolling.

I then tried DVI - absolutely superb picture !!! Problem is that with the

pmj...
Yep, the DVI (Digital Video Interface) *should* be better, cos it
Saves the Video Signal from being Converted to Analogue - which is
what ordinary CRT Monitors need - & then back to Digital, which is
actually what LCD Monitors need (internally).

DVI connection the contrast setting is not available (yes I'm sure of
this). Stuck with glaring brightness :-( I have played around with the
colour settings and reduced it a bit - but by no means enough.

pmj...
So you're talking about the Controls on the Monitor itself then?

BunnyHare...
That is good news TH. Not that the monitor was faulty but that Dell
came up trumps and are going to replace it. Very good

Yep - with DVI, there are far fewer adjustments that can be made on
the Monitor, they need to be done in the Settings on the Graphics
(Video) Card that is Driving it (in the PC)

Might be worth a try whilst awaiting arrival of new monitor?

Troy's Human...
Certainly will keep on trying but I think I've exhausted the possibilities.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Peirrepoint...
TH,

It may be possible to alter the settngs via your video card. If you go

pmj...
That's *exactly* what I was going to say!!!

Almost all Video/Graphics Card Drivers these days have Settings for
adjusting the Brightness, Contrast, Hue, Saturation, Gamma & also
loads of other things as well.

control panel-> display->settings->advanced you may be ble to make the
adjustments there. You may find the colour setting referred to as Gamma

pmj...
TH,
What make of Graphics Card/ChipSet is it?
Is it an Onboard one (usually Intel)?
Or is it an ATI Radeon?
Or an NVidia GeForce?

Depending on what sort it is, someone should be able to point you
to the specific Settings (& the place to find them) to adjust it to
how you want it.

It doesn't sound like a faulty LCD Monitor to me.
It just needs adjusting (Setting up) right.

& that needs doing in the PC/Graphics Card/Driver Settings

Also, make sure to check it with some proper Colour Test Pages
&/or Utilities - you can find them on various Websites.
I Posted up some Links to some a while back, if someone doesn't
come up with the Links to them, I'll see if I can turn them up again.

though.
