Taken a leaf out of Splodge's book :-)

MCC...
All 'My Documents' and 'My Pictures' folders backed up to CD, including web
pages, family tree documents and such like.
Everything that I could delete has gone to the big cyberspace in the sky.
Windows Defender, Registry Mechanic, ErrorClean and CCleaner all run
followed by a deletion of all System Restore Points except the last one and
then I defragged my hard disk.
Whoooooosh :-))
Camera memory cards formatted in their respective cameras so that the index
numbers go back to 0001, ready to start a new year.

pmj...
Which now, surely, means that you'll end up with several Duplicated
File (&/or Folder) Names, for your various Pictures?
:-(

MCC...
Not really - my folders for 2007 will be numbered 01_07, 02_07 etc, and
pictures taken each month this year will be downloaded to the respective
monthly folder so there's very little chance of a conflict.
All last year's photos are now on CD anyway and no longer on the computer,
so there's even less likelihood of a conflict.

pmj...
Now that intrigues me...

I know that quite a lot of people do seem to do that - storing their
Pics on a CD (or DVD), which is a very good idea, but then they
*Delete* them from their PC?

What's the point/purpose in doing that then?
I've never understood why people then *Delete* the Pics from their PC.

Surely, it would make eminent sense to leave them on the PC (in a
Folder somewhere), so they can quickly be accessed as & when they are
(or might be) needed?

And I sort my photos by Date Taken and not by file name or number.

Bring it on

Splodge...
Bet you didn't leave it as long as I did Mike.lol
Splodge

MCC...
Hasn't been done since I defragged this time last year.

Splodge...
You'll have pmj turning over in his bikeshed lol

pmj...
It doesn't really matter to me, does it?
If people choose not to Save & back up their stuff, properly,
regularly & frequently, then it's *them*, isn't it?

MCC...
Vital stuff like bank account details is backed up to a USB memory key
every time it is altered, likewise my family tree files. I doubt if I have

pmj...
Ah, right!!!

But I know that a lot of people *don't* actually do that sort of
Saving/Backing Up of their stuff!
:-(

MCC...
You obviously need to look at your photos quicker than I do :-))

pmj...
LOL!!!
Not really...

But it does seem to me to be a lot of Faffing around, having to find
a CD & bung it in, when it would be so easy to leave the Pics on the
Hard Disk & find them whenever they are needed

It doesn't take me very long at all to load a CD into its little drawer so
that I can view it.

I don't have a huge hard drive either (120 Gb) so I like to have as much

pmj...
LOL!!!

120 GB is actually a fairly reasonable size, isn't it?
OK, yes I know that many PCs these days now come with 250 GB, 360 GB
or even more, but how much of that 120 GB Hard Disk have you actually
*used*?

free space as possible.

pmj...
Pictures don't really take up all that much space on a Hard Disk,
do they?

Even if each Picture is 3 or 4 MBytes in Size, (& I know many Digital
Cameras do Create Picture Files that big), that means that each GB
(Giga Byte) of Hard Disk Space can store over 250 Pictures!
(1 GB (Giga Byte) is about 1024 MB (Mega Bytes)

& 120 GB can contain about 150 (or more) *full* CDs.

How many CDs of Pictures do you have?
& how many Pictures are on each CD?

I'm asking these Q's, cos I'm sure that many people these days actually
have *more* than enough Storage Space on their Hard disks.

It's only really *Videos* (& possibly a load of Music Files) that
will actually need a lot of Hard Disk Storage Space.

MCC...
I take all my photos in .RAW format, which means 12Mb for each photo so
that eats into the storage space rather rapidly.

I have ten or a dozen photo CDs with 600 Mb used on each - I rarely fill
one up.

Rabbit...
Sheesh it doesn't seem that long ago since the HD on my laptop ( 9Gb) was
considered big. When I bought it it was bigger than my desktop and I
wondered what I'd do with all that space :-)

anything else that would cause me grief if I lost it.

pmj...
That's OK then!!!

But I think you'd be surprised (I know I am, continually) at how many
people *don't* make sure to Save & Back Up their stuff up properly.
& then they complain when something goes wrong & they lose it.

It's *they* who will suffer the loss of it.

I do always try to suggest to people that it's a good idea to make
sure to have proper Back Ups of all the stuff that they really don't
want to lose.
But most people only seem to worry (or even think) about it *after*
they've lost a whole load of important (& usually irreplaceable) stuff.

MCC...
Years since I lost anything :-)
Now watch me have a hard disk crash :-))

pmj...
Exactly!!!

No one can ever know when something like that might happen, so it
makes sense, doesn't it? - To make sure to always have your stuff
properly Saved & Backed Up, so when something unfortunate happens,
you can be sure to get it back OK.

MCC...
Don't tempt fate, please! I'm now in the habit of uploading my vital files
to my webspace so that if my PC dies I'll still be able to access them from

pmj...
Now, that's a *very* good idea, isn't it?
:-)

& it also means that you'd be able to access them from any other PC,
anywhere, so long as it has an Internet Connection available.

Ali...
As can anyone else, unless you have taken appropriate precautions (better
than putting an index.htm file in the directory); and there's nothing you
can do to stop the techs at the hosting company accessing the files; so I
hope you have the files themselves encrypted.

MCC...
I'm well aware of the risks involved, but the files are password protected
on a dedicated storage site, designed for the purpose.

Ali...
Great, but other readers of this thread may have thought it a good idea,
without realising the risks.

Rabbit...
Gizza hint where that is please and is it free?

MCC...
20 Gb free - if you want more then you pay.
They have never let me down.

Rabbit...
Thank you. That'll come in useful.

Also, some hosting companies do not want to be used as a data repository,
and say so in their T&Cs

MCC...
See above.

MCC...
My thoughts too :-)

my laptop.

Splodge

Aries...
cor that's impressive!

Smokey...
Might just do that myself over the next few days Mike, well done
next
