perhaps a device to put in a drive bay that i can plug audio etc into
the front of the machine? i need to swap speakers for h/phones
occasionaly or of course have both functioning at times that would get
me out of my problem. Or i spose i could get yet another mile long wire
to run to the front of the machine :-)

Maplin do a device about half the size of a ciggy packet that you plug
h/phones and speakers into with a switch to move between the two.

I use something similar to one of these
and plug the phones in one side and the speakers in the other.
The phones have a volume switch which I turn down when using the speakers
and the speakers have a switch which I turn off when using the phones.
