Is there a way for me to enable Java ?
pmj...
I have been trying to use a programme called - You Tube - it is a site
andon...
|
This link works great.
I run it regularly and have launched it 4x today :-)
If you cannot run the videos then you need to click
the Tools menu / Internet Options / Security / Custom Level
now scroll down to the bottom end and slowly come up to find
Scripting - Active scripting
If you have this NOT active then that is the problem.
You must have this ACTIVE.
I just made sure by turning my setting off, and I get the same error
message you have. Turning it Active again plays the videos
|
where you can listen to music or watch video clips.

I haven't got any *direct* experience of that particular Site,
but I do know a bit about Sites that use things like Java & what
a nuisance it can be, cos there are various probs associated with
it (differen tVersions & stuff like that) & lots of different
Settings that can affect things.
You don't actually need java to see Video Clips!
But then that assumes that the Video Clips *are* actually ordinary
Video Clips - you can use pretty much any old Media Player to Play
ordinary Video Clips.
But yes, some sites (like this "You Tube" thing?0 use a Java Applet
to Play the Clips.
|
I used to be able to acess it easy - but now after I log in and try to play
anything or watch anything, I get a message saying: "Either Java is switched
off or you need to download the latest version of Macromedia Flash player" -
pmj...
|
Well, does the Site need *Java* or Macromedia Flash?
They are 2 completely different things.
Yes, they can bothe be used for lots of things (including Playing
some Video Clips)
|
Well I already got macromedia flash player - and I assume I already got Java
Swithched on - as I used to be able to acess this site a couple of weeks
pmj...
|
& what about any *other* Sites that use Java?
Can you still access them OK?
Try going here & Opening up some of the Pages there, that use Java -
they have lots of Demos & things that use (& need) java

Is there a Computer genius who might advise me please ? Do you think it
might be a fault on the website perhaps ?
pmj...
|
Yes, it may well be!
A good Site should be able to give you a better description of the
prob & some decent Instructions on how to identify the actual prob
& how to sort it out.
But in the meantime, you can do a few things yourself to check
what's what...
I'm assuming (for the mo) that you are using WinXP?
& it's got Service Pack 2 on it?
& that you are usin gInternet exploer V6 (also SP2)?
If not, please Post back with what Operating System (& Version)
& what Web Browser (& Version) you are using - but similar things
apply whatebver.
If yo udon't know what Versions yo uare using, & don't know how to
find out, then Post back for morre detailed Info about that sort of
thing.
In IE6, go to:
Menu>Tools>Internet Options...
Switch to the "Advanced" Tab & Scroll down past the "Accessibility"
& "Browsing" & "HTTP 1.0" Sections...
There should be a Section (just above the "Multimedia" section)
labelled "Java"
What does it say in there?
Is it something like
[ ] Use Java 2 V 1.x.x_xx for |

The videos on You Tube are all streamed in Flash. If you have Flash
player installed then you should be able to see them.
The pages contain quite a lot of Javascript.
I suspect what you are seeing is the "Javascript" alert. This is not
"Java".
You have Javascript switched off.
You have to switch it back on somewhere in your browser preferences.
Depends on the browser you are using as to where they are.
You have obviously changed this setting, or something else has, since
the last time you were able to access the site without problems.
pmj...
|
Yep, & that's in Addition to the [Reset Web Settings...] Button.
|
pmj...
|
But that Setting is *specifically* for the *Java* Permissions...
(which then have a whole load of settings of their own!)
& *Java* isn't actually involved (or used) on that Site - it uses
Macromedia ShockWave Flash (also J(ava)Script, which is completely
different from (& separate from) Sun (or M$) Java
|
pmj...
|
Well, the "Medium" Setting on the Slider for the overal Security
Settings will ,but the "Medium Setting on taht *Java* Permissions
won't!
|
pmj...
|
I see what you're saying, but it's not that (Java) Permissions
Setting that does that.
It's the Internet Explorer Security Settings Slider (for the
Internet Security Zone) that would be the one to change.

How about trying a different Site?
One that uses ordinary Video & Music type stuff, that you can Watch
(&/or Listen to) in a normal Media Player?
