Has there been a recent change in the size of numbers and letters on them?
I can recollect that when they changed to the year letter back in 1963 that
the digits reduced in size a little and I think that the test distance limit
for reading the plate changed from 25 yards to 22½ yards - or something like
that, but now there appear to be a few plates around with even smaller
symbols around here now.

Rabbit...
I've seen a lot I don't think are legal, including a couple with a fancy
curly font and at least three in the area with personal plates which I'm
100% certain don't conform to the proper spacing, oh and there's some which
have obviously been sprayed with the stuff which is supposed to stop Gatsos
reading them, they could be in for a shock some day ;-)

After looking at thi BS:
it appears that they may be imported cars - but should these display our
conventional pre 2000 numbering system?

So now it's numbers, FN: You guys drive on the left side
of the road. You need more than number-plates to worry
about. :-)

Old Grizzly...
The Irish are considering changing to drive on the right hand side John!
on Sunday the buses will change over and if its successfull, a week
later everone else will change sides LOL

Rabbit...
The majority of our cars also have stick shift, John. I had Merkin visitors
a couple of years ago who hired a car, he steered, she changed gear :-)
