Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
Just read this elsewhere.

Any of you guys/gals tried this?
It upped my speed from 2Mbps to 5Mbps.
However don't blame me if owt goes wrong :o?

When asked what optimizer was this reply popped up:

Just polished my crystal ball, and I'm guessing he means something like
places.

I've used this, and it does make a massive difference. It has been
discussed before on this group.

Anyone tried this? And if so can it be used to tweak a modem router in a
similar way to tweaking a normal modem who's software is on your pooter's

pmj...
Nope - Things like that TCP Optimizer Set the TCP Settings in the
*windoze* Registry.

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
As I suspected - so if these guys are claiming that they can up their BB
speeds from 2000 kbps to around 4000 kbps (or even more) by using it, they
presumably are using modems - but wouldn't you think that someone would come

datasmog...
No, I think they are either lying or sadly misinformed and unable to
read what's on the pc screen properly.
Don't waste your time, accept what you've got is ok and live with it.

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
So you don't think I'll ever be able to get my download speed above 70% of
the synch rate then?

datasmog...
Look out the window.
Do you see any pigs flying?
You would have to live in the exchange to get anywhere near that.

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
Last night it was synching around 3250 kbps and I was getting a download
speed of 2882 kbps. Is that good then?

datasmog...
I've just had a conversation with PlusNet re download speeds. They tell
me it's a contention issue as the slow speeds I've been reporting are
all taken during peak times. It is therefore not a fault.
I'm on a premier account with a contention, allegedly, of 30-1
I responded that there must be an awful lot of PlusNet customers in
Spalding to drag my download speed down to 90kbps when the router is
syncing at over 5000.

I think you need to stop worrying about this and get on with life.
For what it's worth I reckon you're doing all right.

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
Well so far in the last month: kitchen extractor fan seized - had to buy
new, fridge packed up - had to buy new, repairs to car exhaust heat
shields, medical problems, download speeds less than 240 kbps for 3 weeks
and now Sky Digibox needs replacing. You call that all right? Goodness
knows what the next 4 weeks will bring. :( And you all thought I was

Rabbit...
So exactly how many mirrors did you break ???:-)

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
That's the funny thing, all 9 in the house are intact.

Rabbit...
Doesn't mean they aren't out to get you :-)

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
Isn't that what I implied? ;)

paranoid. :)

Anita...
Well, it is a lot better than what you have been getting ;)

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
This is true. But synch rate is 4352 kbps this morning but still
downloading at 2844 kbps. looks like I've been throttled to 3000 kbps

Anita...
Now, you do not know that - could still increase ;)

I do not check mine very often but this morning about 15 minutes ago it
was 2080 kbps and downloading at 259.14 kbps which I consider good as I

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
I hope that 259.14 is KB/s Mine was 355.51 KB/s as measured on the Plusnet
Portal speed tester.

Anita...
No it was as I typed above kbps

am on 2mbs :)

maximum then.

up with a similat way of optimizing a modem-router ?

Your Router doesn't use windoze as it's Operating System, so it
doesn't have a "Registry" to Set the Values in.

But all Routers *do* have various TCP Settings, (such as the MTU
& RWIN etc,) that can be Set for optimum performance.

BUT...
Almost all Routers have those Settings already set correctly - it's
only a *very* few ISPs, such as AOL, which need any different Settings.

& yes, your *windoze* TCP Settings (on the PC) *do* need to be Set
right, so that the communication between your PC & the Router (& thus
the Internet) is Optimal...

But (again!)...
It was mainly w98 which benefited from changing the TCP Settings
- WinXP comes with them already Set for optimal use.

You can use something like TCP Optimizer to confirm that those
Settings are OK - but I though tyou already did that?

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
I've checked the MTU but can't see a value for RWIN anywhere in my router
pages.

You can easily see (& establish) whether the Router's own TCP Settings
are OK (for things like the MTU - Maximum Transmission Unit) - look in
the Router's Admin Pages & see how they are set, then do a Ping with
the -f (Do Not Fragment) Flag Set & the -l (Send Buffer Size) Set & try
different Sizes, until you get a Response saying something like
"Packet Size exceeds threshold, but the 'Do Not Fragment' Flag is Set"

then that tells you what the MTU should be.

Look up on the Web for the exact Procedure & command Line to use.

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
Well I checked the MTU size - it's set at 1460 and if I do ping -f -l 1460
I get responses of 64 ms, if I try 1480 or 1500 I get:
Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set.
Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set.
Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set.
Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set.

So it looks like 1460 is correct value for my router's set up.

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
That's easy for you to say, seems a bit beyond my abilities though. :(

hard drive.
