Last night the PC was acting strange despite having AVG anti
virus,Sygate pro firewall and regularly using ad-aware, spybot etc,
I decided to use Housecall from trend micro which detected a couple of
problems which I let it fix.

Thanks for the warning Froggie :-)
We do back up here at Tyke Towers.
We have an external 300gb hard drive - set to back up everything on the pc
three times per week.
The trick is remembering to switch it on ........ ;-)

An external hard drive is to be my next purchase Russell. My son is trying
to find one like his on E-Bay.

LOL Yes it does help if you do :-)

BTW
Trend does not like Firefox :-(
Any workarounds or am I going to have uses Explorer???

Now the nasty bit, when I started my e-mail client (The Bat!) it opened
asking for prompts as if it had just been installed and lo and behold
all my e-mails and all accounts and settings had gone eeeek.
Whilst this was inconvenient i fortunately had current backups which
restored things to normal however the problems housecall flagged bore no
resemblance to anything related to The Bat!.
In conclusion, if you are going to use any on-line AV program or similar
please make sure you have a full and current backup available in case

I use Trend
frequently to do a security scan for spyware and vulnerabilities, since it
quite often picks up spyware cookies that spybot and CCleaner don't seem to.

These, when found, I let Trend fix. There's never many (maybe sometime one
or two if any are detected, if I have run CCleaner first. If I don't run
CCleaner first then it will pick up a few more. Never had any problems
(touches head - wooden - and crosses all digits) so far. The only bugbear

Similar, this picked up a few minor problems which I let it fix and then
found out it had deleted ALL my accounts and e-mails in The Bat! (my e-
mail client) but none of those problems were related to The Bat! in any
way shape or form so why it did that is beyond me.

And me - come on pmj - any reasons you can think of?
Incidentally Froggie - was your email client open when you scanned for the
little nasties? I usually do my checks with next to nothing open, just
before I shut down.

No I close down everything I can before scanning etc :-s

|
|
is that the above URL usually takes me to the Scan page but occasionally to
a different one which is trying to persuade me to buy stuff.
