John...
I was Westcountryman......I am having trouble with my Wireless network
connection. I have a connection from my laptop by wireless to my
router, and this is apparently active, nut will not connect to the
internet. When I click repair on the connection it comes up Limited or
no connectivity, and will not find my IP address......Any ideas anyone

pmj...

John...
Apparently the computer did not assign a network address according to
the "Network Status"

John...
It will just not renew my IP address. :-(

pmj...
Actually, it's not the "Computer" that didn't assign a "Network Address"
- it's the Computer that wasn't assigned a "Network Address!

That's a subtle (but very important) distinction.

The Computer (i.e. the Wireless Network Interface Card) is allocated
(Assigned) an IP Address by a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration protocol)
Server & that (the DHCP Server) is normally your Router.

If the Computer/Wireless Connection isn't being Assigned an IP Address
(in other words if it has an "AutoConfiguration" IP Address in the
Range 169.254.x.x), then that's cos it hasn't been able to find
(& make contact with) a DHCP Server

Often, with a WiFi Connection, that's cos you have got the WEP (or WPA)
Security Key wrongly Set up (or not Entered Correctly)

How are you Connecting up to the Internet at the mo?

If you can tell us that, then we may be able to help.

John...
If it helps, I set up my friends computer to access BB on my network,
and that worked OK, but when I came to open my own connection on my
laptop it wouldn't work as above

pmj...
Ahhh...

I *suspect* (but without more Info, can't be sure) that that may well
be (at least part of) the problem...

Maybe something (or someone) has Accessed the Router Admin Pages
& (either intentionally or inadvertently) changed the Settings on it?

First thing to do (if it was me trying to sort it out), would be to do
a Factory ReSet [*1] (not just a ReBoot) on the *Router*, so as to make
sure that no other WiFi stuff can connect to it.

(make sure you have the ISP Connection Details noted down *first*)

[*1]
How to do a Factory ReSet will be in the Manual - normally you Press
& *Hold* the ReSet Button on the Back &/or Power the Router Down
& then back on again.

& then Connect up to the Router, using an Ethernet Cable & Access
the Router Admin/Setup Pages on it & (first of all) Change the Admin
PassWord on it (so that nobody else can Access it/Change stuff, without
the PassWord)

& *then* (after doing that) Enter the ISP Connection Details (the
UserName & PassWord), into it again so as to get the Router Connected
up to the Internet.

Then, when the *Router* is Connected to the Internet OK (through
the ADSL Phone Line Connection) Set the WEP/WPA Security Key up on
it (using a *different* one from before) & get your Laptop Connected
up to it OK, using the WEP/WPA Key that you Set up) & *then* start
thinking about letting other WiFi stuff (such as neighbours etc,)
Connect to it - just give them the WEP/WPA Key, (so they can Connect
to/through it) but *don't* give them the Admin PassWord. - I assume
at the mo that you didn't use any Admin PassWord? - that's a *bad* idea,
if other people have access (using the WEP/WPA Key) to the Router.

Post back, for more details if you aren't sure about any of the above.

John...
The repair process stops when it gets to "Renewing your IP address" and

pmj...
Yep.
That's cos it can't get an IP Address from teh DHCP Server (which is
in the Router)

windows could not finish repairing because this action could not be
completed. So how do I get my IP address back so that it connects
please....That is the problem by the looks of it. :-(

Gareth...
Have you tried turning off your router for a minute or two, then
turning it back on again?

John...
No, but I have rebooted both machines.

Gareth...
Then try unplugging the router.

pmj...
& try doing a RBoot of the Router...
[*1]
But... (see below)

John...
Still don't work.......I have my wireless settings typed out, and the

Gareth...
Then I'm foxed John. :-(

btw. the third word in your reply is taboo in here, you have to use
ROT13 to say the word JBEX ;-)

pmj...
So now, you need to try doin ga factory ReSet on the Router
(rather than just a ReBoot)

pmj...
Good.
You will need to Re-Enter them, once you have done a Factory ReSet
on the Router.

wireless is working. I just can't connect to the net through it....It
has no ISP details to connect on as far as I can see. I have my ISP

pmj...
But the *Router* has those!?
Cos it (the Router) *is* (from what you say) Connecting up to the
Internet OK?

It's just that the PC (Laptop) which is using the WiFi Connection
(to the Router) that can't get an IP Address (from teh Router),
so it can't get onto the Internet through it.

pmj...
Good!
You'll need them, so as to be able to Enter them (into the Router)
once you have done a Factory ReSet on then Router

settings, but can't find anywhere to put them.....and no rude replies
please! :-)

Aries...
well spotted Gareth ;-)

Gareth...
Measles or chicken pox? :-)))

Aries...
that was a rash statement ;)

Gareth...
I was itching to make it. ;-)

Aries...
Scratch my last post then ;)

Gareth...
I might get splinters. :-(

Aries...
lol - nite Gareth ;)

Gareth...
G'night Valenana ;-)

pmj...
The ISP Details (UserName & PassWord) are Entered into the *Router*
& *not* into any of the PC's that are Connected to the Router.
Yes, you use one of the PCs (or a Laptop) to Access the Router,
to Enter the ISP details, but they are stored in the *Router*
& not on the PC(s)

[*1]
You *can* actually get it all sorted out without doing a Factory
ReSet on the Router, but that will be a lot more involved & a lot
more difficult, especially when we are trying to do it from a distance,
just by using News Posts.

So long as you have your ISP's Connection Details (which you should
have anyway), then there's no problem doing a Factory ReSet on the
Router.

But yes, you'll also have to Set up the WEP/WPA Security on it
(& also, this time, make sure to Enter/Change the Router Admin Page
PassWord)

pmj...
You need to follow the steps in my other Reply.

The prob at the mo, is cos the Laptop is connecting (by WiFi) OK to
the Router (i.e. it's getting a *Radio* Signal OK), but it isn't being
Allocated an IP Address (by the Router), cos it isn't Authenticating
properly with the Router.

John...
I am connected via a dongle into a usb connection. I have tried

pmj...
What Make (& Model) of USB WiFi Dongle are you using?

& are you using the WiFi Configuration Utility taht comes with
the USB Dongle, or are you using WinXP's own (built-in) WiFi
Configuration Utility?

Depending on which you are using, that will help us suss out the prob.

checking my Security key and re-entering it. I think this only opens
the wireless connection doesn't it? The laptop will not connect to the

pmj...
Yep.
The WEP/WPA Security thingy is needed to establish a Connection
(from teh Laptop or whatever is using the WiFi) to the *Router*
& the *Router* is what Connects to the Internet.

pmj...
But will it Connect to the *Router* OK?

You need to find that out first.

internet.

please?

Mike Clayton...
Has it ever worked?

Have you put your username and password in the router?

John the R-T...
A little more info please. ISP? Router?

I find that occasionally I have to switch my cable modem off for a
couple of minutes in order to get a connection.

John...
My ISP is Orange formerly Wanadoo, and my Router is D-Link DSL G604T

pmj...
Can you get to the Router Admin Pages OK?
I Suspect not, if you (your PC) haven't been Assigned a valid
IP Address, but at least this will help pinpoint the prob...

Open up a Web Browser & (try to) Go to...

That's the Default IP Address of a D-Link DSL-G604T Router

Post back with what happens when you Copy & Paste that into the
AddressBar of your Web Browser, or when you Click that Link.

& can you Connect OK to it (the Router) - i.e. does your PC get
assigned a Valid IP Address - using an Ethernet Cable, (rather than
the WiFi)?

John...
My Desktop computer is working fine. The laptop which is normally
connected to the network by wireless connection is the one which will
not connect. I can access everything from my desktop

pmj...
Is the Desktop Connected to the router by an Ethernet Cable?
Or by WiFi?

Can you try Accessing the Router Admin Page (URL above) using the
Desktop & Post back with whether or not you can get to that OK

& also, then try Accessing that same Router Admin Page using the
Laptop (WiFi) That Page is in the *Router* (& not out on the Web),
but it does require a (working, Valid) IP Address on the Machine you
are trying to Access it from.

That will help us with sussing out the prob, when we know what's what.
