I know it isn't due to the cold weather.
pmj...
Recently I've taken up the habit of setting my pooter to hibernate if I'm
going to leave it for ½ hour or more, rather than turn off and reboot
Rabbit...
|
Serious question... why? Is there really any reason for hibernation nowadays
pmj...
|
Yep!
There definitely is!...
|
? I can understand with a laptop, saves battery power, but I can't
pmj...
|
It also Saves *Mains* power, with a Desktop.
Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
|
That's one of the reasons a Tyke like me would use it (It seems these Scots
are still learning a thing or two)
|
|
understand the reason nowadays for hibernation with a desk top.
Aries...
|
I use hibernation quite a bit with my lappy as it keeps it from overheating
between uses and is quicker than pressing the start button to fire it up
again - jbexes a treat for me :)
Rabbit...
|
That's what I said, I can understand hibernation with a laptop.

Well it means the psu isn't w*rking, and that's what is the cost element.
I'm basically lazy, and if I hibernate the computer, when I wake it up I
don't have the bother of starting up all the progs I was using, like OE
etc. They are already open .
Aries...
|
absolutely :)

Cos it Saves Power, mainly.
StandBy leaves the PC *On*, consuming Power (to keep the RAM Memory
Contents) & leaves the PC vulnerable to Data Losses, if the PC
is Powered Down (or UnPlugged, or if there's a Power Cut/Failure.
But when you use *Hibernation* (as opposed to StandBy), the entire
contents of the RAM Memory is saved out to Disk & then the PC is
actually Switched *Off* (or at least the Power to the Motherboard
is off - the Power Supply itself is normally left on - though you
*can*, if you want switch it off completely, thus using *no* Power
at all.
Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
|
My PSU is switched off when I hibernate and that consumes almost one unit of
electricity every three hours (KWH - kilowatthour)
Rabbit...
|
WOW!!! Don't spend all the money saved at one time. You realise that you
have just proved that a Tyke is a Scot with deeper pockets and shorter arms
Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
|
Yep! You Scots have still got a lot to learn. LOL
|
???;-)
|
|
So, when you switch it back on, it Boots up very much quicker
than having to Boot up from scratch & it just loads the Contents
of the RAM back in (from the hiberfil.sys File) & the PC carries
on from where it left off.
Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
|
The other reason I use the hibernate facility in XP.
|
Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
Unlike when you Boot it up from scratch, where it has to Boot up
first & then Load/Initialise all the Drivers & Software etc.
& then you have to Load back in all the various Programs & Documents
etc, that you were working on.
|
|
pmj...
|
That seems reasonable & a perfectly sensible thing to want to do...
BUT...
The "Hibernation" Function of windoze is notoriously fickle -
everything (from the Motherboard through the BIOS to the HardWare
& the Drivers *all* have to (properly) support Hibernation
There are any number of things that can cause the Hibernation
Function not to work properly.
:-(

later. On the last occasion about 3 hours ago - it gave me the screen
message *Preparing to hibernate*, and I left it to it's own devices,
expecting everything to shut down in a few seconds. Not so, I've just got
back, and everything is as I left it with the same screen message. The
only way I could get a restart was to switch off the mains and then boot up
as normal. Even Ctrl Alt Del did nothing at all. Anyone out there think of
what happened, and possibly suggest a remedy?

Pooters only hibernate in the winter lol

Perhaps FN should seek advice from a hedgehog or tortoise? ;-)

Got enough b******y slugs and snails in my jungle that I could ask thanks.
:(

|
pmj...
|
Nope.
Jeff Gaines...
|
I'm not sure about that. I turn off hibernation immediately after any
re-install because 'it's always been flaky' so there has definitely been a
pmj...
|
But (like r@y says below) WinXP is better than previous Versions
of windoze.
& more recent MotherBoards (& BIOSes) support Hibernation
(& various other Power Management features) better than before...
|
strong message from somewhere not to use it, may be different now but I
still don't use it.
datasmog...
|
It seems to be a lot better in XP than previous versions of Windows but
it's not 100% perfect. In fact it's probably about 50% perfect. I reckon
pmj...
|
That depends on the particular combination(s) of HardWare, Drivers,
BIOS & Motherboard, doesn't it?
|
my Sony Vaio laptop fails to wake up 4 -5 times out of 10. But I don't
pmj...
|
But is that *Hibernation* you are talkin gabout?
Or "StandBy Mode"?
2 different things
|
use it that much so the time between sleep and waking may be a factor in
pmj...
|
Yep.
That *may* be a factor, but it's more likely to just be a particular
combination of some of the Software/HardWare related stuff.
|
Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
|
I think that mine hibernating was upset 'cos I was running Process Explorer
in the background. Since I've turned that off it's performed perfectly.
pmj...
|
Yep, some Programs (& Utilities) - as well as some HardWare & Drivers
can cause probs with *entering* Hibernation (&/or StandBy).
& also (different) probs with coming back *out* of Hibernation (&/or
StandBy)
If it's a Program that is not Shutting Down when it's told to,
by windoze, then there are some Registry Edits that can be made
to adjust the length of time that windoze will wait, for a Program,
to give it time to Shut itself Down & also to *force* a Program to
Shut Down, when it's told to.
Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
|
I'll just make sure PE isn't running when I try to hibernate - talking of
which, I'm getting a little tired now so night night everybody.
pmj...
|
I've not actually tried using Hibernation for a while!!!...
I also have Process Explorer Running almost always in the
Background on my System, so I'll have to try Putting the System
into "Hibernation" Mode (with Process Explorer Running) & see how
it handles that - if there *is* a prob with it, then I'm sure that
SysInternals.com would like to hear about it, or they may already
be aware of it & have issued a new Version - what Version of Process
Explorer are you using? V10.11 (May 11, 2006) is the latest, Current
Version.
As soon as I've Posted this reply, I'll try putting the PC into
Hibernation Mode, with Process Explorer (& TCPView & TaskManager
& Skype & NetMeeting & Internet Explorer & OutLook Express etc,)
Running...
& see what happens...
|
|
|
|
that.
|
|
Sorry - It just sounds like you've hit one of (or some of) the
probs involved?
How much time & effort are you prepared to put into tracking down
(& reading up & finding out about) the prob?
Check out some of the various Articles about "Power Management"
& ACPI etc, on the M$KB (micro$oft Knowledge Base) Site & elsewhere
around the Web, for some Info & pointers & suggestions.
The WinXP "Help Center" thingy (available on the Start Menu) also
has some useful Info about it & there's a "TroubleShooter" thingy,
to Run through, which might Help.
