A grandson (not Jamie this time) has been given a 2nd hand laptop for
Christmas (Didn't bother telling me). He started to install Norton anti
virus - got half way and then changed his mind. The laptop now operates so
slowly that it's un-useable. He's tried to uninstall it without success -
message saying uninstall failed. He came round today but I was unable to
help.
Thought tonight that System Restore might be the answer so phoned him. He
can't find System Restore. OS is Windows 2000 Professional. Anyone know if
this OS has System Restore and if so where it's to be found ?
Jeff Gaines...
|
No, it was a new feature in XP.
JoeH...
|
Actually it's also in WinME Jeff.
Not being picky, it's just that I think a few in here may use ME and
may find it useful.
Jeff Gaines...
|
Sorry, I was going down the NT tree rather than W9x :-)
BoyPete...
|
ok for shopping I s'pose ;)
Nah, I thought he was for the Bugatti? He raced the plane in it didn't he?
Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°5 +...
|
Probably - and the plane won. But I saw him in a Lamborgini yesterday and
the Stig drove it - about same time around their test track as the Zonda.
Up right at the top.
I think it was the Gallardo:
A mere 520 bhp, but then you don't need a second mortgage to fill up the
tank. :)

Anita Carter...
|
Yes, Joe - I have ME and it is in there too:)
|
|
No probs, I guessed that's what you meant. I just want to make it
clear for others.
|
I only know one person who used ME, and I withdrew support from him
until he he ditched it :-)
JoeH...
|
LOL I know what you mean. Did he got to XP or back to 98SE? Either is
preferable to ME IMHO.
Jeff Gaines...
|
He went to XP, although W98SE would have been an option. He likes the
tarty bits, he'll love Vista :-)
Anita Carter...
|
I have been using ME for a long while - and have no complaints about it
Pam the goose...
|
Same for me, Anita.
I used ME from when it first came out until we decided to go
to XP earlier this year and I've had more trouble keeping XP
stable than I ever had with ME.
For me ME just ran perfectly 99% of the time and the odd 1%
was always my fault and System Restore put everything back
where it should be.
I loved ME!

Norton is a pig to remove, but someone has posted a link to the removal
tool.
Rabbit...
|
Someone ???
Troy's Human...
|
Troy certainly didn't refer to you as "Someone" :-)
I think he quite liked you :-)))
How's the Trobbit BTW ?
Rabbit...
|
Oh the darling little trobbit is sad that Santa can only afford to bring a
tangerine and a shiny penny :-(
Troy's Human...
|
Ummm ......
The Trobbit *did* get the rather large cheque I sent him ?
Didn't he ????
Rabbit...
|
It must have got lost in the post :-)
|
If not I'm taking legal action !!!! *You* don't need that sort of money -
you're rich already !!!

Me waves at Jeff
With a rolling pin in my hand :-P
Jeff Gaines...

Sorry, it's just a sign of how bad my short term memory is :-)
Rabbit...

Wot is ??? :-)
Jeff Gaines...

Troy's Human...

Thanks Jeff. I think we might just be getting somewhere.

BoyPete...

Don't know about SR, but I 'think' Nortons website has an uninstall tool.
Really not sure but worth a look. Alt., if the laptop is new to him, he
Troy's Human...
|
Had a look but can't find it - will have another look tomorrow.
Rabbit...
|
This any use ?
Troy's Human...
|
Thanks for that Rabbit - looks like it could be what we need. Link emailed
to the lad. I'll keep you informed :-)
Rabbit...
|
Hope it does the job OK. I had it bookmarked 'cos a friend ( who has a
nephew who knows *all about pooter*) is starting to complain about problems
since she installed Nortons on the advice of said nephew. It had already
jbexed for another friend ( who has a son who *knows all about pooters* ).
Both those were a full install though.

won't have much on it.......how about a reformat?
Troy's Human...
|
Indeed - that was my first thought. "Do you have the OS CD Tom ?". Blank
look from Tom :-( He doesn't have it :-( I've given him (and his Mum) a bit
of a lecture.
Thanks BoyPete.
BoyPete...
|
Hey.......we all have to learn. Fair chance the OS files are on the system
somewhere?
Troy's Human...
|
But a reformat would need a CD with Windows on it to reinstall Windows
surely ?
They aint got one :-(
pmj...
|
But they can make one - Burn the Operating System Install Files
to a CD - they are normally in a Folder called "i386", which is
usually in the windoze Folder
For W2K I *think* the windoze Folder is usually, by Default
called "WinNT", but whatever it's called, it can be found easily,
just Browse for it - it's in the Root of the Boot Drive.
Or you can Open it up directly (on W2K, WinNT or WinXP) -
by using...
Start>Run %systemroot% [OK]
BTW - for w9x use...
Start>Run %windir% [OK]
But the Install Files aren't in a Folder called "i386" on w9x,
they are usually in a Folder called Option\Cabs (or Flat), but
not all w9x Systems have the Install Files on them - WinXP & W2K
do usually.
When you've made an Install CD from the Install Files in the
"i386" Folder, you will also need a Set of Boot Floppies (or an
MSDOS Boot Floppy or CD), but it's prolly easier to make the
actual Install CD Bootable - you can do that using something
like Nero Burning ROM or any 3rd Party CD Burning Utility that
supports making Bootable CDs

PMJ needed here. If the OS files are on the HDD, then a Reformat/reinstall
can be done, but I don't know how.
What is the OS, out of interest?
