Aries...
Unlock my Maxtor external hard drive. It has an icon with a padlock on it
which says Maxtor Locked Driveds :(

Tickettyboo...
Found that via web-search,

As Jim recommended in his post above use chkdsk. This worked for me.

To repair Maxtor OneTouch, logon as Administrator, open a Command Prompt
window and type: chkdsk x: /f
(where x: is the drive letter).

If I were you I would read the whole thread cos I dunno nuffink about this
stuff

Aries...
there is no drive letter so I put in E, nothing happened, it is still
showing as locked even after a reinstall and restart :( I have read that
page already but thanks for looking Boo,

Anita Carter...
Here is another one Val - worth a try:

Aries...
Not sure about that Anita but thanks for looking :)

Tickettyboo...
Did you try looking in Computer management to see if it says anything in
there about a drive letter?

Aries...
Yep, it just says Disk 1

Aries...
I am reinstalling it now and if I get the same problem I will try that Boo
:)

Tickettyboo...
Do you have more than one log on for your pc ? Are you currently not
logged in as an administrator?

Aries...
Only one log on and I am administrator

Tickettyboo...
:-( Okay then, if it hasn't asked you for a username/password, have you
looked in the bumf that came with it to see if it says what the default
username/password is ( if any) that it is shipped with ?

Aries...
That wouldn't jbex Boo as I am not given any option to fill in a password -
just says locked and no way can I get into it, so I am uninstalling the
thing and reinstall to see what happens.

Aries...
I uninstalled and re-installed my Maxtor Hard Drive and directed it to have
no security settings.

pmj...
I wonder how that Option got changed (originally) then?

I then right clicked on My Computer/manage and partitioned this external
drive into 3 drives E, F, and G. E drive I use as a backup, F drive is a

pmj...
But doesn't that mean that any Data on the various Partions that
were on the Hard Disk would now be lost?
:-(

backup for My webs, and G drive for Music and Graphics.

pmj...
& did you have the Information on it all safely Backed up?
:-)

Or did you just rely on having still got the Original Data
from where it came from?
:-)

Each new drive was formatted and named and all jbexing now as it should
thank goodness - it wasn't broketed after all - phew :D

pmj...
But surely, it was never "Brokted" in the first place?
It was just a Setting/Option somewhere which was Set to make it
"Locked"?

So your day has been worthwhile already then. :)

Aries...
so far so good :)

Anita Carter...
So pleased to read that, Val and your solution could help others too :)

Anita Carter...
Haven't you got a user name and password for it, Val?

Aries...
I wsn't asked for one when I backed up on it :(
