Jeff Gaines...
It arrived from Play.com today, pretty quick delivery :-)

pmj...
Oh great!
Nice one!!

I bet you're going to (& will have had) lots of Fun with that!!!
:-)

My wireless network is reasonably secure, the SSID is not broadcast,
access is limited to specific MAC addresses and I use 128 it WEP.

So, after 45 minutes of fiddling and trying to enter a 64 digit key using

pmj...
LOL!
:-)

Yep, that's fairly typical of the sort of probs to expect with those
sort of things, isn't it?
I recently saw someone Setting up an HP Printer/Scanner/Fax Machine
All in One thingy, that uses WiFi

& of course, when it came to connect up to his WEP Secured, Encrypted
WiFi Network on his ADSL Modem Router thingy, with SSID Broadcast
turned off, it was a bit problematic, but we managed it in the end.
:-)

It worked OK for about a fortnight & then he rang me to say it was no
longer working!
:-(

We haven't yet established why - it works Ok from the *other* PC,
using the WiFi, just (no longer) from his PC that he wants to use
it from.

a knob and button I turned off all the security on the WAP, re-set the AE
to factory settings and turned it off/on. It found the network immediately
but was expecting DHCP, which I don't use, so I had to enter its IP
address manually plus the netmask, gateway and DNS server. It then
connected immediately and down-loaded all the stations from the Reciva

pmj...
As it should?
:-)

pmj...
Doh!

pmj...
Sheesh!
How come you don't use DHCP?
I know you've mentioned it before, but wouldn't it be easier?

Jeff Gaines...
It's got at least something to do with a 3 hour combined Skype/NetMeeting
session with somebody, who shall remain nameless, trying to punch holes
through my router to get NetMeeting working in both directions :-)

It also makes life a bit easier in tracing problems.

pmj...
Great!!!
(well ,that's great if that's what you want it to do)

Jeff Gaines...
No, it's a radio. It can get this 'play again' stuff and it has a button
for some (future) inter activity but I got it purely as a radio, small,
neat, compact and works as long as the router is on.

can it Access *other* stuff on the Net?

portal. I can now select stations by country or genre, I am working my way
through a lot of 60's stations ATM. It's much easier than finding them on
the Web and, of course, it continues to play when the computers are all off.

I also pointed it at my MP3 collection on my server, it took about 25
minutes to work its way through the share finding files - I couldn't find
a way to just point it at the music folder so it had to plough through

pmj...
LOL!
But I see Ali has come up with a way round that?
maybe that's worth a try, if you ever have to do a "Factory ReSet"
on it & have to Find all your MP3s again?

Jeff Gaines...
I've posted something about data backups down the group a bit :-(

Ali...
How about making a new share of just the music folder?

Jeff Gaines...
That's a good idea, it's done it now but I'll try that if it ever has to
be set up again :-)

160GB of data. Once it had done that it was possible to choose music by
Artiste/Album, still exploring that.

pmj...
Can you Access it's Interface from the Pcs?
Or only by using it's own Display & Knobs/Buttons.Dials?

Jeff Gaines...
It's an Arm processor running Linux so the Linux guys will hack it
eventually I'm sure!

Sound quality is OK, AE make quite nice Hi Fi speakers and although these
are small they're OK for bedtime listening.

So a fun piece of kit with a much wider choice of stations than DAB.

I am putting the security back on the WAP step by step, I have re-instated
the MAC address table and hidden the SSID, have to try WEP again at some
point. Of course every time I changed anything on the WAP the laptop lost
its connection so I had to fiddle with that as well. Not sure how anybody

pmj...
LOL!
But you don't really want to be out in the garden in this weather,
do you?
:-)

Jeff Gaines...
I've laid about a third of my mowing strip, but it doesn't keep my
attention for long.

with limited network experience would get on with it, they would be OK
with an unsecured network and DHCP but nowadays wireless security is quite

pmj...
Yep.
I think that's prolly the reason why more of those sort of things
aren't being Sold?
They are perceived to be "complicated"?
despite the Manufacturer's efforst to make them "easy" to use - but
they can only be "easy" to use (& Set up), if they don't have anything
in the way of Security on them.

The very people who would benefit from them the most (& also increase
the Sales of them, to help bring the prices down) are often the sort
of people who don't want to get involved with any of that sort of
"complicated" stuff.

important. Will have to see if the alarm works in the morning :-)

pmj...
Yep.

Thanks for Posting back with your experiences of it.
I found it very interesting.

& let us know if the Alarm bit of it *does* work in the Morning?
:-)

Jeff Gaines...
It did!!!

Good job too, the plumber arrived at 8 a.m. to fit the new bathroom :-)
