Hi Splodge - Thanks, but I suspect that it's just a matter
of what interests us. I enjoy learning about these academic
details. Who knows why! (lol) I just do. I had an academic
upbringing. I wish that I had learned to love to cook instead! (lol)

Probably due to a lack of chocolate.
Have you suggested that as a cause to the doc?

Can't do that - I'm a stubborn ol' b****r. ;)

It is perfectly possible, although it is unusual, for a person to
have withdrawal symptoms because of a sudden deprivation of
chocolate. If the persons average consumption is high it is possible
for them to develop a physical chemical addiction as well as a
psychological dependance.
Fortunately Mrs On is aware of my chemical Needs and even my PA
keeps an emergency supply hidden for me :-)

Hi Splodge - Going to Canada on July 10th?
If you'd like to visit us at Lake George, let us know.
We're located about 3 hours south of Montreal in NY State.
Have a good trip in any case. How long will you be in Canada?
Splodge...
|
I'd love to Sea, but I'm spending 6 days in Ottawa with my friend and she's
got a lot of things arranged, including that Mountie. After that I'm flying
to Vancouver and doint eh Rocky Mountaineer to Whistler.
It's going to be touch, but someone's got to do it:))))
Thanks for asking me though.
Splodge
~~seadancer~~...
|
Too bad you have no time to visit NY, Splodge.
But I realize your time is limited.
Nice that you're seeing the Western part of Canada too.
Last year our son visited Banff in Alberta Province.
The photos of the mountains and lakes are beautiful.
The webpage below has a nice little map showing both Vancouver & Banff.
Also, the webpage below has a little map which shows Whistler
and tells a bit about it. (Scroll down to bottom for the little map.)
I'm sure you have better maps, but I was satisfying my own curiousity. (g)
Have a wonderful trip!
Splodge...

You're preaching to the converted here Sea, but I've looked at your links
and reminisced a lot. I've been to Canada every other year since 2000, so
this will be my 4th visit. Also, I have two nieces and a nephew in Edmonton
but I've decided to give them a miss this year cos they're all busy running
their businesses.
I fell in love with Vancouver in 2004, but Whistler will be new for me this
time. I can't wait!
You're very kind, but be warned, Lake George might see me next time around
cos I'm already thinking about an Alaskan cruise - and I love flying across
North America:))))))

Enjoy!
I'm off to Toronto for 3 weeks on June 4th, then I'm going to drive to
Montreal via Philly & New England.
A week with friends in & around Quebec & then back to Toronto for the
trip home.
Should manage some rail-fanning & some train travel too, as well as
the driving.
i'll try not to eat too much!
Cheers, David C.

What rail travel are you doing David? I've heard a lot about the VIA trains,
but haven't tried them yet.

Splodge, what does VIA stand for?
I hate it when companies use initials and don't explain them.
Anita...

I'll be gentle with him Anita:)

It is from the Latin for way or path and means 'by means of'' and 'by
Splodge...

You just beat me to it Anita. It's odd that it actually isn't an acronym at
~~seadancer~~...
|
Thanks, Anita.
I didn't realize that the train company's name*, "VIA" was
the same word as "via". (*VIA Rail Canada)
In caps, it looks like an abbreviation of some sort.
It's a pretty clever idea to use a preposition like that for
a company name. But I wonder how many people are like
me and didn't make the connection.
I usually take my tours VIA bus. (lol)
|
all, but a proper word.
Splodge
Anita...
|
Yes, it is true - but it is a short way of saying something like 'via
mail' instead of 'by way of mail'. Just a laziness I suppose :)
Ali...
|
Not laziness - labour saving! And space saving - an important consideration
in timetables and route descriptions.
|
The one that always surprises me is the use of 'versus' it is normally
only used instead of the words 'opposed' or 'against' - as in legal
matters.
Why use one word to replace one word?
Ali...
|
It's shorter.
When written it is usually abbreviated to one letter - v - 'opposed' or
'against' could not really be cut down to o or a in the same way.
|
Makes it sound more important I suppose ;)
Ali...
|
Both of these words are survivors from when nearly all educated men knew
Latin and used Latin and Eglish interchangeably. Other Latin words have
become so well used we rarely realise we are using Latin words.
|
David C...
|
Bearing in mind that Canada is "officially" bi-lingual, when "they"
were looking for a name for the 1st-ever national passenger rail
service, they needed a name that:-
A. Meant something sensible.
B. Worked in English & French..........
Otherwise they might have selected CanTrak, ( Amtrak = USA passenger
trains, for those that don't know..)
(VIA is currently a Crown corporation, but was originally a marketing
name for Canadian National's passenger trains.)
For more info, ask a Canadian........

way of'

They've taken a preposition ("via") and turned it into a
proper name, "VIA". Very unusual. I thought the "VIA Rail Canada" was
Ali...
|
Or perhaps they took a Latin noun ("via - "road") and turned it into a proper
name: seems appropriate for a railroad.
|
an abbreviation for a name like: Victor Ian Anderson's Rail Canada (g)
It might even have been an acronym for:
"Very Interesting Activities on Rail Canada".
Who knew? (lol)
|
|
|
|
From what I understand, they don't often wear their red uniforms now Jackie.
I was beginning to think I'd have to grab one in the street, but I'm being
taken to the Parliament Building in Ottawa. Should be able to purloin one
there, even if I do have to hobble after him:)))
jackie...

Shame about their nice red uniforms, but I do hope you see and speak to a
