~~Linda~~...
Can anyone read the writing and make a guess as to what this job was?

John the R-T...
Looks like
General Labourer
Laundress Wash

John the R-T...
I now think that is
Launderers Wash

John the R-T...
Yep. Found him

~~Linda~~...
Rofl... funnily enough in another search for another branch of the family I
have discovered we have a Banknote Printer!!!

Michaelangelo...
A quick web-search reveals that 'Laundress Wash' seems to have been a
recognised occupation around the turn of the century. It's used
regularly in the 1901 census.

John the R-T...
On a more serious note than my last
Wash.

Guager at Projectile Works. (Sorry for the language folks!)

And yes... I really should be doing something else!!

Michaelangelo...
Which line are you trying to decipher?

~~Linda~~...
Sorry Mike, I did just clarify in Pam's reply, it was the last line :-(

linedancer...
Projectile engineering company

~~Linda~~...
yes I found that one, interesting... the sidetracking during a family hunt
can be fascinating, can't it. :-)

Thanks everyone, for all the help, advice and sheer enthusiasm.

datasmog...
It looks the person who filled in the census form spelt gauger wrong and
the checker clarified it by writing M. Mach (machinist or machine
operator) over the top. As to what kind of machinist or where, take a
look at pages before and after to see if you can find the same wordso r
similar that might clarify that.

~~Linda~~...
Good idea, thanks. Haven't actually found the same job description but
comparing letters convinces me it is Gauger in Projectile Factory and more
research makes it seem likely, considering it was Battersea.

If you know where, i.e. the town, then a general search on the web for
industry in the town around that time may help.

~~Linda~~...
It looks like it could have been a munitions factory... just one of the
references to it (albeit back in 1940) is a picture in the Tate Gallery

It's just a great big jig saw.

~~Linda~~...
Hmmm, it would have to be an awfully big box to fit all the pieces!

Pam the goose...
I get:-

General Labourer

Laundress Wash (Though why anyone should wash the laundress is beyond me!)

M. Freach or Inach or something. Is it the name of the place of work?

Guager at Projectile Works

Nothing could be more interesting, don't give it up:))

~~Linda~~...
Sorry everyone it was the last line i need! We thought Gauger at Projectile
Works too... wonder what the heck it was? The family lived at Dashwood Rd,

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6...
Just searched the web for - what about the second one down?

~~Linda~~...
It doesn't give a lot of description but hubby just made knowing noises
about GO and NO-GO gauges lol

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6...
Sounds about right.

Battersea (or something like that) if anyone knows the area.

Gareth...
Yes! But I see it's already been answered. :-)

That area is where me and many of my ancestors came from.

~~Linda~~...
This particular 'branch' are Smiths... there are billions of them!! And why
oh why do they all have children with same name, and then they have
children... etc. I'm getting so confused which one was married to which!

btw. A good tip when you find a query like that is to go on to the next
page and look at other occupations. The same applies if you cannot read
the name of the street.

~~Linda~~...
It gets a little easier after a while, you start to recognise the patterns
of writing. I was being a little bit impatient (or over excited) that day
and decided I'd rope in some help from the more experienced in here! :-0

Aries...
any help?
General Labourer
Laundress Wash
M. Machin. (machine?)
Guager at Projeclile Works

~~Linda~~...
Yes thanks Val... it was the Gauger one I was looking after. Found lots of
info since then but isn't it hard to keep on one train of thought and
concentrate on it? I keep getting sidetracked lol

Wrinklie One =?iso-8859-1?Q?=A9?=...
