Jeff Gaines...
I have been tasked by my daughter to recommend one of these as a Xmas
present for her husband. I'm sure they exist but I don't know what they're
called or who are the decent manufacturers.

Baldrick...
The very best nav system is called an AA map and the best way to treat speed
cameras is to keep to the limit and keep yer eyes open !!!!

Jeff Gaines...
I use an old Collins map - it has bigger print!

Knowing the speed limit is another issue. On the way back from Wales
yesterday some of the road works had been closed off for the night. There
were speed limit signs covered over, lying on their side and turned
sideways. In the worst case the matrix signs were still showing a 50 limit
a couple of miles after the end of road works sign. Goodness alone knows
what the speed limit really was.

Anybody any recommendations?

Mike Clayton...
I got a brand new Acer N35 on ebay this week for £120 all in. It is a
PDA with built in sat nav. It comes with the software, car cradle and
car charger. It handles spread sheets and word documents etc and syncs
to Outlook.

Jeff Gaines...
Thanks Mike, I need to have another chat with Daughter and try and find
out exactly what facilities she is looking for. Last time I did that was
to find her a laptop - just for email, web browsing and MS Word. It was a
Xmas present, by Boxing day she was editing videos on it!

linkuk...
This looks a good model and good price mike, how have you found it so far?
does it go right down to a complete postcode or partial only?
Does it give voice instructions as well? (only asking because i saw
elsewhere a guy saying he didnt have voice on his)

Faolan...
TomTom are generally regarded one of the best, I was passed this site
(but not used it) for some of the cheapest prices:

I already have a PDA which can link into a Bluetooth receiver for the
software.

Another link that could prove useful:

For camera warnings, simple don't speed! If you do want to go this route
you will have to take out a subscription for the services with whatever
GPS company you go with.

Not necessarily...

There are quite a few Databases of Speed Cameras around on the Web
(& even web-search Earth has them)

Have a look at the KeyHole Community (BBS) Site...
(KeyHole is the firm who originally wrote the Application that web-search
bought & ReNamed it web-search Earth) & the KeyHole Community is where
people Post up lost of interesting Info about what they've found on
web-search Earth & where you can Download "Layers" & "Placemarks" containing
all sorts of Info...

Look at the "Dynamic Layers" & also the "Travel Information"
& "Transportation" ones

Some (though not all) GPS & SatNav things can Import Databases
of "POI" (Points Of Interest) from 3rd Party Suppliers - though others
only let you import stuff from the Manufacturer's (Subscription)
DataBases.

Even some of the ones which *say* you have to Subscribe to their
Service *can* actually Import 3rd Party Databases, if you Convert
the (3rd Party) Data into the right Format first.

jackie...
Don't really know anything about them Jeff but have heard that TomTom are
supposed to be the best.
