Seeing the posts about mobile phones lately has prompted me to think
about mine.
At present I've got a Sendo S330 on Vodafone PAYG. It's Ok but the
screen is very small and if it fails there isn't much hope of a repair
as Sendo have gone bust. :-( Ok, it only cost 30 squid two years
ago but........
So, I'm looking at a Sharp GX29
or Sony Ericsson v600i
Steve...
|
I'm a Sony fan but be wary of the little joystick< I've had 3 break on
me, but they seemed to have sorted it out on the post 600 series phones,
currently have a K750i excellent piece of kit. No experience with Sharp

I've never broken my joystick Steve, you must have heavier fingers than me.

though.

|
Thanks Steve. K750i a bit pricey for me.

V600i no longer available in the shops so I've bought a K510i. Final
decision made after getting stuck in Harlow for over an hour on the
13th on the way to mums. Sun was so bright that I couldn't read the
menu on my Sendo in order to let GGJ know what was happening.
Got £10 trade-in for my old phone which cost £30 just over two years
ago.
Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
|
How much did you pay for the K510i John? That's the one I ordered from
Orange, but they discontinued it. :(
John the R-T...
|
£70 + £20 top-up - £10 trade-in.
Without the top-up would be £90.
Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
|
I see Amazon were asking £79-99 - so I'll just wait for Orange and their
cronies to offer another one for free.
|
Online it's £81 without the topup
Just been out for a Bluetooth headset in case I get caught up in
traffic taking mum home later in the week. Last Wednesday was a
nightmare. Stuck in traffic in Harlow for over an hour when the M25

was closed and all traffic diverted via the M11 or A406. Eventually
turned round and went home for lunch. Went the long way round (via
Surrey) in the afternoon. No problems. Took 90 minutes.
Unfortunately it took just on three hours to get from mums back home
here.

I don't drive far these days so that's a problem I don't get any more.
|

|
I don't *really* need all the bells and whistles but, I didn't think I
needed a mobile phone until two years ago when we were lost in
Peterborough and I had to borrow mums!
Rabbit...
|
Oh I like that, mums do come in handy even at your age ;-)
|
Has anyone any experience of either phone or similar please?
BTW, we weren't actually lost. Someone had pinched all the road
signs.

Stereotypical male excuse, though I must admit I haven't heard that one

A friend was telling me yesterday about a road closure where the local yobs
had repositioned the diversion signs and so many cars were driving into the
estate they couldn't get back out.

it Pete Seagar who sang about
"Little boxes on the hill side, little boxes made of ticky-tacky.
Little boxes, little boxes, little boxes all the same.
There¢s a green one and a pink one and a blue one and a yellow one,
And they¢re all made out of ticky-tacky, and they all look just the

Ahead of his time he was, that's what all new build * luxury* ( why are all
new builds now luxury???) houses are now. I personally know of one where the
upper floors are MDF. Guess what happened when the plumber left leaks to the
bath/shower taps ???:-)

I currently have a K700i............never again. Beware any phone with a
central 'joystick' button. Unless you have minute fingers, it's a beggar to
use. I'll be going back to a Nokia with seperate up/down/left/right buttons.
John the R-T...
|
Is that the little white button in the middle?
BoyPete...
|
Yes. I have small fingers, heaven help anyone with large digits.
John the R-T...
|
|
Also, I got caught out without my charger last weekend...........get another
one?? no way! With a Nokia, you can borrow one from almost any house in the
street.

I've had two SonyEricsson phones so far John - and, as you will have read,
I'm about to get a K510i. The v600i doesn't seem too dissimilar from the
K510i so I reckon you would be OK with that.

Flying Rat...

I've always thought Sharp phones were a bit fiddly. I'm a longstanding

Sony Ericsson user.
If you don't need the bells and whistles, why not track down a K700i ?
It's wot I use at the moment, and can be had brand new for decent enough
money. Not the latest by any means or the most feature-packed, but a
strong and useful little phone which does all I want of it. Vodafone do
them on PAYG which would mean you could just put your existing SIM into
it and keep your number.
John the R-T...
|
Will have a look around but can't see that one on Vodafone.
Flying Rat...
|
they hve a broadly similar one called the K510i available now
405.htm
looks like the same phone just updated slightly.
Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
|
That's the one I'm getting from Orange as a free upgrade Ratty. :)
John the R-T...
|
Don't think Vodafone will upgrade my el cheapo Sendo PAYGo. From
their web site I gather that they only upgrade pay monthly.
Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
|
Nope! I'm sure they won't John - not unless you can convince them that
you're gonna stay with them for ever and will be increasing your usage
John the R-T...
John the R-T...
|
Very unlikely.
Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
|
If you like you can have my old K300i when my upgrade K510i has arrived and
up and w*rking. It comes boxed with a hands free kit and charger.

John the R-T...

Thanks for the offer but I'm really looking for something with a
larger screen. That's what is drawing me toward the Sharp and SE600i.
pmj...
|
If you want a Phone with a big Screen, have a look at the
HTC Universal (which is available under several different Brand names,
such as the T-Mobile MDA Pro & the O2 XDA - that has a Screen that
is 640 x 480 Pixels!!! (about 3 & 1/2 Inches)
John the R-T...
|
So big that it's got a web site of its own on O2.
|
Or the Nokia E61 - That's got a Screen that is 320 x 240 Pixels...
John the R-T...
|
Ouch! Not that big or that expensive thanks.
|
|
|
I presume that although it's currently on the Orange netw*rk that it can be
set up for you on Vodaphone.
pmj...
|
You shouldn't presume that...
Cos for quite some years now, most of the Mobile Network Service
Providers have made sure that the Phones they supply are "Locked",
so they only work on their own Network (in addition, possibly, to be
"SIM" Locked as well, which is something different).
Both Locks *can* be removed, so you can then use the Phone on another
Network, but you normally have to pay to have the Lock removed - either
paying the original Provider, or paying someone who has the necessary
equipment/Software to do it.
Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
|
I'm pretty certain that if taken to the local vodaphone shop it could have
been set up to w*rk on their netw*rk. That's what I was implying to John
when I said ' could be set up' :) i'm told there are guys in the back
streets or down the market can still do it relatively simply.
|
|
John the R-T...
|
Searching around suggests the cost would be about £25.
Possibly cheaper in the local market. If we had one.
Rabbit...
|
Silversurfers do it free online ;-)
John the R-T...

Where? Where?
Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...

I think you must have blinked a couple of times John. :)
John the R-T...

Well I didn't post from the 22nd till the 5th so it must be during
that time.

Well I didn't spot 'em at it either. :(

There's a better description of the 'phone here:

Thanks. Added to my wish list for later in the month.

It's a problem with a lot of current cellphones, the keyboard buttons
are too small. It's miniaturisation in extremis in some cases.
John the R-T...
|
That's what I find with my Sendo. Plus the screen is small.
|
The k750i is a nice phone, good quality, good sound, especially like the
speakerphone facility, the camera takes a good picture in daylight, plus
movies with sound, the clock keeps good time, it has a reasonable
datebook and address book which they say will sync with Outlook. It
John the R-T...
sorta works with iCal. Has Bluetooth to connect to your PC and PDA.
John the R-T...
John the R-T...

Bluetooth is part of what I'm looking for. Handy for travelling on
the M25.
|
Built in mp3 player and FM radio plus a couple of naff games. TriBand so
you can use it in merica, plus gprs hi speed internet and wap. Sits in
John the R-T...
John the R-T...
the shirt pocket no problems.
John the R-T...
|
Just what I'm looking for then. But more than twice my budget.
|
Oh and it makes phone calls too. It's not bad at that bit, if your
fingers fit the buttons.
|
Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...

I find the joystick on the K300i OK to use:

A little above my budget but.........
