But the Moon doesn't have a Dark Side. Not permanently, so there's not
crater on The Dark Side of the Moon for more than 15 days, and having to move
the Mothership every fortnight would be rather inconvenient. Much better to
stay in earth orbit, beyond the Moon.
(Which would take some fancy flying to stay in sync with the moon.

Assuming his shuttle-craft has a working cloaking device, on full
impulse power it wouldn't take too long to commute from earth.
