What are the chances of finding someone born in 1833 in London on
ancestry.co.uk? As I understand it, that date is before registration
became a legal requirement in England, so maybe parish records would have

Have you tried the Church of Latter Dad Saint's site at:
They have access to lots of church records Mike.

Having said that, I've just looked for a John Smith born in 1790 in both
Ancestry.co.uk and Ancestry.com and both came up with loads of hits.

Gareth...
Why do you look in both the .co.uk and .com sites?

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
Just making sure. :)

Gareth...
rofl ok :-))

Tickettyboo...

Michaelangelo...
I have to admit, I quite like having me around again :)

Tut! Tut! Another one who hasn't yet learned how to translate the
gibberish my dyslexic keyboard occasionally spews out. :)

Grannie Annie...
It wasn't a smelling pistake then :-) ?

I see you've got a keyboard like mine as well then. :)

to be searched?

Gareth...
Yup, Civil Registration didn't start in England and Wales until 1st
July 1837.
The IGI may help with the christening date.

MCC...
Thanks, but I had already tried the IGI without success, using all sorts of
permutations on the spelling of the surname :-(
I even tried the surname without a forename and ploughed my way through all
the hits that brought up - thankfully it was a rather uncommon name. ;-)

Gareth...
Do you have access to and tried the BVRI (British Vital Records Index)?

MCC...
Unfortunately I don't know what part of London this chap was born, so the
BVRI isn't of much use to me - he could be in any of the counties bordering
on London and finding his birthplace isn't that important but it would have
been good to find out why he was born there, being the son of ship's
carpenter :-)

Gareth...
As he has a fairly uncommon surname have you tried finding him on the
early censuses as that will show where he was born?
(if you have acces to the censuses that is!!!)
Oh, and I have the BVRI v.2 on CDs so could do a search on there for
you.

MCC...
Thanks Gareth. I've got the man and his family in the censuses for 1881,
1891 and 1901 for Orkney but I can't find him any where in the country
before that. Doesn't really surprise me because his son was born in New
Zealand so his mother was more than likely there at the time

If your BVRI can find any details for John Laughton Knarston, born 1832 or
1833, in London (all the detail on the census)(but maybe Stepney) I'd be
happy to receive it. His father was Samuel Knarston, carpenter, and his
mother was Catherine Knarston née Brown. Thanks. My address here is valid.

Gareth...
John L. Knarston is mentioned on here.

MCC...
Thanks again Gareth. He certainly moved in exalted company

Gareth...
I just realised that I hadn't installed the BVRI viewer on my laptop...
but have done so now and searched through the 10.4 million
births/christenings but to no avail. I checked marriages too and that
also threw up nothing. Oh well, it was worth a try.

MCC...
Thanks very much for all your efforts Gareth. Much appreciated.
