My 87 year old neighbour has decided that she would be better of with a
word processor than her 1933 Remington Portable :-)
I could set her up with a laptop and printer, doesn't need to be very
powerful at all. Before I start researching does anybody have any
experience of these dedicated word processors that I think are still
around? One I've heard of is the Alphasmart Dana for instance.
Any input would be appreciated :-)

It would help to know what she's likely to be using it for - the annual
letter to Santa, her regular column for NME or maybe her ten volume
autobiography?

I have no experience of them but I'd definitely go for a PC every time.
Word processors only do one thing, whereas PCs can do other things too.
Also I'm not sure if WPs will take USB flash drives. PCs will so documents
can be carried around quite easily. There's no need to buy expensive
software either, both AbiWord and OpenOffice are free and are pretty good
packages.

That's where a keyboard comes in handy ;)
I agree 100% with pandamonium BTW.
