Rabbit...
Anybody with a Freeserve/Wanadoo PAYG account got mail from them with

We're about to change the number your computer uses to dial-up the Internet.
You don't need to do anything now, we just wanted to tell you nice and early
about what's going to happen. From 1 May we'll pop up some instructions on
your screen. Just follow these instructions which will download a small file
with the new dial-up number.

Can a techie person tell me what the file is likely to be and if I really do
need to
install the file when it arrives or can I just change the telephone number

BunnyHare...
Hmm, I'm hoping for that too cos I have no idea what they mean.

Rabbit...
I suspect it will be the same sort of software they try to make us install
when we sign up. At least I'm hoping it is 'cos I know we don't *need* that
but I'd like a techie's opinion.

Methinks their account is likely to be ditched

Rabbit...
So will mine if I need to install the software. Mind you I am hoping the
price rise might just convince a friend that PAYG isn't really as cheap as
she thinks. I already reckon that even with her limited use it costs her not
much less than a BB connection nowadays.

Ali...
It will be some form of configuration file ( which may possibly attempt to
re-brand your mail client ), probably plain text readable in Notepad or any
other text editor.

I see no reason why you should not just change the phone number.

here ?

BTW the mail goes on to say it's going to cost more and they are changing
their privacy policy :-(

Ali...
It's all these people who get PAYG accounts, use the webspace and mailboxes,
but don't actually dial-in more than the minimum neccessary to maintain the
account. The ISPs need to make money out of them somehow.
