Aries...
I've ordered a new Dell desktop - a pretty basic one but with enough RAM
and hard drive for my needs plus various chosen options. I can always add
extra cards and stuff as and when I need them can't I :D

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°5 +...
Yes but at a price. :(

Hi Val: Don't listen to Flying Nun. I have owned a custom
pc, an HP, & a couple of Dells. The Dell beat the pants off
of the others. FN is a mean man & I'm canceling his free
copy of my new book, "The Road to a Happy Old Age." :)

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°5 +...
Thank goodness for that, I ain't got enough RL time left for reading that
sort of **** ;)

As for cards, I just added the three of spades to my pc &
it works like a charm. Enjoy.

Aries...
This lappy is the first Dell I've owned and I love it - very impressed in
fact. Now if I were Victor Kiam and had his money I would buy the company
LOL

Troy's Human...
What spec. Val? I think I might be doing the same soon. Went to PC World
today with the intention of buying what looked like a good offer PC but
decided the monitor was not good quality - hence the bargain price. Came

BoyPete...
snip

And, unless you are forking out large 'wads' of dosh, they all use onboard
graphics........bang goes a large chunk of your RAM.

Aries...
roughly how much is a decent graphics card Pete?

BoyPete...
Well, unless you are gaming or doing intense graphics, £100. or so should
do. If your have Dave Lear gamingitis.......treble that :)

Aries...
I don't want it for playing games - do you recommend any particular make?

BoyPete...
Well, I have used ATI Radeons for some years now. Quite happy.
If I were building a poota atm, I'd look at something like this.....
128Mb HiS Radeon 9600XT Classic (D-Sub, DVI, TV-out) £81.08

available here........
HTH :)

Aries...
Thanks muchly Pete - I will be saving my pennies then LOL Will that
particular model of card be happy fitted into my Dell desktop ? It's not
like buying memory then?

BoyPete...
I can only Guess..............yes. The Dell 'should' have an AGP slot to put
it in. But, before buying card, you'll need to look

$irVivor & =?iso-8859-1?Q?=A7ire=DFird?=...
I would check if it has an AGP slot first, the Dimension 2400 I bought from
them doesn't. Had a quick look on their site at the 1100 and can see no
mention of an AGP slot in the specs.
I know I'll not buy another Dell, To much of their products are custom
made, so you *have* to buy upgrade items from them.
HTH.

BoyPete...
Good point........that rings a bell somewhere. I was once asked to 'sort' an
HP some years back. The inside layout was nothing like a standard ATX.

away empty handed.

I've also heard (as Ray points out) recently that Dell have problems with
after sales service but I've not heard about poor quality components. Think
I might risk it - not had problems with Dell in the past.

Rabbit...
What I've read in various places about Dell is just as you say. It's OK
unless something goes wrong then their CS doesn't want to know. For instance

Troy's Human...
I read that at the time but have heard nothing since - I wonder ...

that would put me off is that it joined the list of companies outsourcing

Troy's Human...
But most big companies are doing it now. I love not to do business with
companies doing this and using 0870 numbers but it's getting difficult :-(

their CS abroad. I try my best to avoid any company taking jobs out this
country.

Rabbit...
Yep and it's very difficult with companies like BT but I did move my bank
account and refused the last insurance quote ( for car, building and
contents) which was the cheapest. I'm going to do my best not to give in to
outsourced companies, for one reason at least being that I can't find a
definitive answer to whether the DPA applies. I rarely use 0870 if at all
possible. If it's not on the synoto0870 web site I try searching the web first. I'll
keep up my personal protest as long as I can.

Would be very interested to hear more details of the one you've ordered.
TIA.

Aries...
Well as I said it's not a top of the range by any stretch of the
imagination but it will suit be just fine. I did not want speakers because
I have really excellent stereo speakers here I used with my old desktop,
and I chose not to have the 56K internal modem as I have one here I can put
in myself. I also chose not to have the 3 year warranty but the 90 day
return to base option.

Troy's Human...
Very interesting Val thanks. Amazing for that price. The trouble with
ordering online from Dell is that you can customize your own PC and I
always end up adding lots to the original price :-)

Aries...
I did the opposite - I took stuff away from the one I ordered :) Or you
can ring them and order exactly what you want according to their web site

Troy's Human...
That explains why you're rich and I'm poor :-)

BTW - thanks for that link.

Aries...
YW :)

Aries...
Thanks everyone who made negative comments and making me feel depressed
about my new purchase. I wish now that I hadn't mentioned it.

Ali...
It doesn't matter which manufacturer you mentioned, someone would have had a
cautionary tale, if not worse.

Rabbit...
It wasn't all negative just the after sales and CS part. With any luck you
won't need those.

BunnyHare...
Oh Val ((((hugs))))
If its any consolation my daughter had a Tiny machine which had all
sorts of negative comments. It was fine and she used it for 7 years no
problems. She now has a more powerful computer and SIL just took the
Tiny one back with him after Christmas to give to one of the charities
he supports.
My own desktop is a Fujitsu Siemens - again, one that has had a few
negative comments - but it has served me well for 5 years so when I
bought the laptop recently I went for the same make.
There will always be people who have had bad experiences with certain
companies but at the end of the day you just go with what suits you
next
