MCC...
How come my laptop's MAC address has changed?

Tickettyboo...
I don't think it can, its sort of inside the wifi card and can't be
altered, certainly not by your isp.

I've been having difficulty with my Wireless network this evening in that
my laptop steadfastly refused to connect.
On the router I have MAC address filtering enabled as part of my security
settings. It was only when I noticed that the address in there for my
laptop was different to the one shown in the DHCP client list that I
realised something was amiss.
I typed in ipconfig /all in a DOS box on my laptop and sure enough, the
address in the MAC address filter was wrong.
Now I *know* it was correct, right up until earlier this forenoon but
somehow it went and changed itself.
Anyone have any clues as to how it happened, please?

Aries...
No idea Mike but your problem sounds very similar to the trouble I've been
having with my wireless network for the past few days and was having to use
a network cable. Mind you I haven't checked the mac address yet.

Could it be that Plusnet have connected you to some different system? Like
Tiscali wholesale instead of BT Wholesale.

MCC...
The chances of my exchange being LLU'd by Tiscali are about on a par with
me (or you) winning the lottery :-)
Although SWMBO and I did win a fiver on last night's Thunderball :-))))
And Mrs Jerry Atrick won a tenner :-)))

QED LOL

Tickettyboo...
No, but maybe ( like me LOL) you had a fiddle in your router page when
the connection wouldn't function this morning. I get the feeling that as I
was restarting the router it got royally confused ( maybe the adsl popped
on and off during the restart and could do that?) This evening , when I
came home, some of the settings had gone a bit jelly tots up.. it was set
to PPoE rather than PPoAand the VCI was reading as 0 rather than 38. I
'know' I never messed with that! oddly enough , the username and password
were ok
All seems tickettyboo now though

MCC...
I admit to having a fiddle but only inasmuch as I told the router to
reset to factory settings and then re-loaded my old settings that I had
backed up.
I know the MAC address has changed because I wrote my old one down in
anticipation of needing it when I get to my sister's when on holiday next
month, as she has a wireless network setup too.

Tickettyboo...
hmm.. is the wifi thing a slot in card? or does it have built in wifi? I
only ask cos my laptop had built in wifi and it was a bit flaky, so I
bought a slot in card ( which seems much better) each of those has its own
mac address. I would have to make sure that they both were in the mac
address filtering to allow me to connect if I used one or the other

MCC...
It's built in, Boo. I shall keep a very close eye on it in case it gets up
to its little tricks in the future :-)
Can't have these machines having minds of their own

Aries...
Interesting ! Mine has built in wifi.

Aries...
have you reset it back to what it was tho ?

Tickettyboo...
I put the correct settings in, or I wouldn't have been able to connect
next
