I have just set up my son and his family's new computer with a dial-up
account with Plus Net.
There are four of them sharing the computer, each with their own log-in.

That's the *first* thing to make sure to get properly sorted out.
Many people (expect to) try to be able to have multiple Users on
a Machine, with them all actually using the same (windoze) Login
(User Account), but inevitably that leads to more problems than
are involved in Setting up the separate windoze User Accounts.
|
I want to be able to set up Outlook Express so that each one of them can
download only their own e-mails and only that person have access to them
pmj...

Yes.
OutLook Express can do that OK.
Each (windoze) User Account has its own OutLook Express settings.
BTW - Each (windoze) User Account can *also* have separate OutLook
Express "Identities" Set up on it, but that's a *completely* separate
issue & not to be Confuzzled with the windoze User Accounts.
Oh & *within* each OutLook Express "Identity", you can also have
separate *eMail* (& News Server) Accounts Set up!!!
So it's no wonder that most people end up getting *very* Confuzzled
by it all!

once downloaded.
Would someone like to give me step-by-step instructions please. I'm OK with

Yes.
:-)
But that's actually very difficult!
Cos it really needs to be done according to the particular (set of)
circumstances involved.

filters to send posts to different folders but I have no experience with

That's Ok, for the individual users to use, to separate out their
Incoming Mail (according to who it's from etc,), but isn't the way
to handle the separation of the actual eMail Accounts.

different people using the same computer and ISP account.

Exactly.
A lot does depend on the particular type of mail Accounts that
they have.
But with PlusNet it's actually quite easy!!!
:-)
You can either Set up a *separate* actual Account with PlusNet for
each User (they offer *Free* PAYG Accounts, which each come with their
own (Separate) Mail Account (& thus UserName)
But if they don't do it that way, with PlusNet (& some other ISPs),
you can actually Set up separate *Mailboxes* on any given Account.
That can be useful (or essential), when using just the one actual
(ISP's) Account.
The first thing to do is to Set up a Mailbox for each Family Member.
(that's if they aren't going to have Separate Accounts with PlusNet)
Go to the PlusNet Member Portal...
Log in with the *Account* UserName & PassWord.
Then go to the [email Settings] Section (in the Navigation on the Left)
Then Click the [Configure mailboxes] Link - either on the main Page,
or in the Navigation bit on the *Right*
Set up as many Mailboxes (on the PlusNet Mail Server) as you/they
need, for the various family Members, so they will each then have
their own eMail Address & also Access to the Mailbox, using their
chosen User Name & PassWord.
There's some quite useful (& Helpful!) Help Pages on the PlusNet site,
which explains it all...
Then, when you have the Mailboxes (on the PlusNet Server) Set up OK, you
can then Enter in the relevant Log on Details for each User into
their own OutLook Express Identity, within their windoze User Profile.

Thank you - will read, learn and inwardly digest :-)

OE will allow you to set up different identities for each user. Each
identity will have its own store folders and can be set with passwords to
keep them private if required.

I think it's worth mentioning here [*1] that the stuff in the other
Identities Store Folder *can* actually, very easily, be accessed
by the other Users, so if Privacy (of the eMails etc,) is a desired
thing, then they would need to use something other than (in addition
to) just the Multiple "Identity" Facility in OutLook Express.
If they each have their own windoze User Account, then that *will*
give proper privacy for their stuff, provided they use the NTFS
Filing System & Set the appropriate Permissions on the Files & Folders.
& the WAB (windoze Address Book) that OutLook Express uses works
using a *Shared* AddressBook for all the (OUtLook Express) Identities
within a given (windoze) User Profile.
[*1]
I know that for many people it doesn't matter, but people can be very
surprised when they find out that the eMails (& Contact Details &
Addresses etc, in their own "Identity" (which they thought were
PassWord Protected & couldn't be seen by the other Users) actually
*can* be seen, very easily, by the other Users, if they want to find
them, or if they know where to look.

Have a look in the help files, do a search and bung identities in the
search box. It really is fairly simple to set up
