Went on the first of the "free bus walks" yesterday
The idea is we travel on our free bus passes, do a walk, then come back
on the free bus pass. Take a picnic with us. Day our for free.
Yesterday was a 5 mile walk along footpaths in the Ross on Wye area

Great them Barb, they are very eye catching, well done. ;-)

Thanks Biffo. Enjoyed taking them

Beautiful pics, Barb! The scenery is gorgeous.
I see by my map that it's in Hertfordshire County,
which I see is on the border of Wales.
BunnyHare...
|
Glad you enjoyed the pictures. Little typo in the county though, it is
Herefordshire near Wales - Hertfordshire is further south. Confusing
isn't it
|
The church in the pic looked very old. I searched the web for and found:

An interesting page there.
We have many old buildings in the UK - just a shame that they are not
always preserved
|
cannot be of much later date than the reign of William the Conqueror,
by whom the manor was given to the Abbots of Gloucester."
I remember the date for Wm. the C, as being 1066.
It's always so impressive to see buildings that old because in the USA,
there are few buildings which go back further than the 1600s.
|
Not a part of the country I know, having only driven through it once on my
way to Telford via Shrewsbury.

Thanks for sharing your lovely pics Barb.

I've noted the different counties. Thanks for telling me!
They are so close in spelling. My goodness.
Jackie Kennedy helped the preservation cause in the USA.
We'll be away in Maine for 5 days. Talk to you all when I get back.

Glad you enjoyed but with summer looking as though it's here and me
with a new camera you may suffer from piccie overload :-))

I enjoyed those piccies Barb, I have been to Ross-n-Wye had a relation
living there
but did not have time to look around. Looks a very interesting area. I liked

Glad you liked the pictures Jackie. Don't know how long it is since you
were in Ross but one couple on the walk had been there 10 years ago and
they said it had changed lots
|
the sculptures.

Thanks for sharing Barb.
Nice to see you can still have a lovely time for "Now't"
BunnyHare...
|
Thanks Russell
Yes it is good to get something for "nowt" as you say. Free buses, took
sandwiches and even picked up a twopence piece so came home richer than
when I left!!

Nice walk, lovely views but I love St Michael's Church, I live old churches.
BunnyHare...
|
Yes, I loved that too. Unfortunately it was locked and although the
name and address of the key holder was displayed our group leader
decided we didn't have time to get the key and look inside :-((

Enjoyed the walk... thanks (and didn't have to use bus pass, which I
haven't got yet)
We used to use a hotel at Symmonds Yat for corporate shindigs, lovely
area. Think it was called Twin Rapids

I've just been encouraging my Mum and Dad to do something similar. They
really don't go out much (Dad does drive and indeed has just bought himself
a new Jaguar, something he's always wanted and now that he has eventually
retired, has got around to doing!) but as they can both get free bus
passes, it is a good way to see new places without the hassle of parking
etc.
BunnyHare...
|
Well done Dad on achieving his dream of buying a Jaguar. Might still
be worth trying to encourage them to use their free passes too. As has
been pointed out, the driver gets a better chance to admire the view
|
Your pictures are lovely... I especially liked the sculpture :-)
BunnyHare...
|
As you may have noticed I do like sculptures. I also like the old
church

Nice piccys Barb - thanks.

That sounds a great idea Barb, know that area a little bit, it's lovely.
Hope you enjoyed it :-))
BunnyHare...
|
It is a good idea. I have been doing something similar on my own but
BunnyHare...
|
Thanks Mike. It's not an area I know a lot about but now that I have
the time (and the bus pass) I am exploring further afield
|
have stuck to main roads. Didn't think it was too safe to take off on
my own across fields and on secluded footpaths.

At the moment in this copy of the Do You Know This-Game on Entmoot I've
clued the area of Wales depicted in those pics.:)
BunnyHare...
|
Will pop over and have a look
Grey_Wolf...
|
U might even be able to help out. 'Cause it's going awfully slow. I
still have 70 pages left to go in the Lonely Planet Guide to Britain.
BunnyHare...
|
Did have a look but found it difficult to find my way around. Not great
on Geography but will keep popping in for a look

Indeed. Lovely photos. Especially the Swan-statue.:)
BunnyHare...
|
Yes, the swan statue was one of my favourites, together with the church
|
|
I remember May Hill. On a clear day I could see it from (near) where I used
to live.
BunnyHare...
|
Glad you enjoyed and that it brought back memories. It's easy to
identify May Hill because of the clump of trees on the top. I camped up
there a couple of years ago

Thanks for those Barb, I enjoyed the walk. :)

Glad you enjoyed it. Next month we will be walking from Tiddenham to
Chepstow

I'll have to make a start on cleaning my walking boots then. :)

Yes and get the map, whistle and compass ready :-)

Nice ones Barb, I particulary like the swans sculpture. Sounds like a

|
Thanks. As you may have realised from previous pictures I like
sculpture in any style, shape or form so the fish and the swans just had
to be photographed.
|
lovely day out, do you belong to a walking group?
BunnyHare...
|
Yes, it's a new walking group set up through U3A specifically for those
who don't have a car so can't join one of the other groups where they
drive to a starting point for a walk. Yesterday was the first one but
they are only meeting once a month so will still do my own walks in
between times
More fun with a group though cos you have a bit of a chat then sit down
together for the picnic lunch
Aries...
|
Tony and I have bus passes now so plan to go out exploring too although I'm
a bit concerned about how long the bus journey will take compared to going
by car :( Spoilt you see LOL
BunnyHare...
|
Well it may take a bit longer but you get more time to admire the view.
If you get a double decker and go on top you can look down right into
Anita...
|
Yes, Val - but on the bus a driver can do what they cannot whilst
driving - look around and see the scenery etc.,
|
people's gardens and admire the plants.
I always make the point that my journey begins as soon as I get on the
bus at Gloucester and it doesn't really matter if the journey takes 15
minutes or an hour there is always something to see
I suppose the fact that we haven't had a car for about 12 years now
maybe comes into the equation
|
Ali...
|
For many buses the travel times are comparable to a car; what takes the time
is the waiting for a bus :^(
Also some buses go the 'scenic way' - if you think housing estates make nice
scenery.
Aries...
|
this is what I'm thinking LOL

Beautiful!!
Don't you have some lovely trips?
Thanks for sharing them:)
BunnyHare...
|
I have decided that now I am retired it's about time I saw some of the
countryside around. After all, what's to stay home for? Housework?
Glad you liked the pictures

|
Thank you Barb - lovely photos :)

Thanks Anita. Enjoyed taking them and also enjoyed the walk. Can't be
bad
