Its Well Dressing time of year again, not seen one this year so we went
over to Bonsall this afternoon for the Blessing of the wells and the
dressings.
Unlike the one we went to last year in Belper wher they were all in the
River Gardens, this one has the dressings dotted round the village at the
pints wheer there is a water source. So, we tagged along with the others
and watched each one being blessed and joined in the service, as well as
having a lovely tour of the place and enjoying the results of all the hard
w*rk that had been put into makin them
Its a lovely old tradition, and if anyone is in the Derbyshire area over
the summer time, I would recommend a web-search to see if there is one near
where you will be.
Took my camera ( well , you knew I would lol)

Some lovely plaques there, a lot of jbex must go into them but I did like
the unusual bunting. Full marks for whoever had that sense of humour :-)
Nice ones, ta.

Scrolling through the photos gave me the feeling I was there! Thanks
for sharing. I don't recall seeing anything like this in
Massachusetts. We are boring lot. lol

They are done to give thanks for clean water, the tradition stretches back
to pagan times . The pictures are made by soaking a board, then puddling
( stamping in to make it soft and squishy) clay which is spread on the
board. Sometimes they use nails too, then the actual pic is made of
flowers, petals, leaves seeds..or anything natural like the bits of slate
and stone in the barn picture. The pictures are placed by springs , wells
etc and there is a blessing ceremony.
As far as I know, its only really done in this area ( Derbyshire, in the
middle bit of England) Maybe you could introduce it to Massechusetts ? :-)

We live among some very talented folks! I do wish we had Well Dressing
around here!
My favorites are Belper and Etwall.

to Tissington W.D. but that was about 1970 - we were living in Derbyshire
then. The children were fascinated... All the contributions are nice,
aren't they? The one done by The Beavers is very good.
