Could my computer be looking for a "Wireless Signal" - that causing the DSL
light to flash ?
At the moment I am not on a wireless system - I,m on Broadband via my
telephone line - every so often this blessed DSL light starts to flash and I
cant connect. I have tried every thing -filter - removed everything else
from the line like fax machine - and phone but the DSL light still flashes
from time to time.

"The DSL Link light will flash when the router is trying to connect to your
DSL service. In most cases, it should take less than 30 seconds for your
DSL router to connect and display a solid light"
It sounds like your connection is dropping and reconnecting on a regular
(or every-so-often) basis.

Thanks JoeH
Thats what I have been trying to tell the help desk personal at BT ... but I
think they have a card that they are reading from cos they all say the same
thing:
Have you tried a new Filter ?
Have you tried connecting straight to the main socket ?
Etc..
Etc,,
Blah - Blah - Blah....

They could be right. Have you tried a new filter? Disconnected your extensions?
They were right about my line. I now have uninterrupted service now that I have my
extension handsets working on hands free.
I had similar problems last year with my lead-in to the house. I proved it noisy
and replaced it. That cured the problem.
You said that you had a noisy line? Why don't you report a fault and ask for an
appointment? That way you will be able to talk to the engineer about your problem.

Hi Saxman ......
I allready did that - the Engineer came round and couldnt find anything
wrong with the line - when I told him the line was sometimes noisy - like
intermittant - he didnt seem to believe me.
Saxman...
|
That's because it is the hardest fault to find and he was probably low on experience.
|
Yes I have changed all the filters and the Modem - and the leads - and
connected it directly to the main socket but still it made no difference.
Next thing I'm going to do is to get BT to install a new extension from the
point where it enters the house and run it upstairs to my Office - If that

Re-report the fault. The more often you report it, the more likely BT will get a
Precision Testing Officer (PTO) in with better equipment.
Get the engineer to check your extension on the next visit. That will be cheaper
than having a new one installed. A new extension will cost you ?100+ and maybe not
prove nothing.
Don't give up. The more sane everybody is, the more likely it will be resolved.

Thanks for some good advice. All I can get out of BT at the moment is a
statement - Quote:
"If we send an Engineer out and the fault lies within your house or with
faulty equippment then we will charge you £70.00" ..
But I will re-report it and see what happens.
At the moment the light is green and solid - it has been like that all day
long - but at 8am this morning it was flashing rapidly - and then all at
once it stopped.
Whilst it was flashing I lifted the receiver and there was a crackle on the
line..... mighty strange.
Anyway thanks for you advice - I will stay calm and collected in hope that
eventually an answer will be found.

BT always warn about charges. It's a requirement. The probability is that you will
not get charged.
For the reasons you stated above, sometimes a noisy line is hard to find. They test
perfectly when they are clear. Ask the engineer to give you a new line if he cant
find a fault.
Like I said, the more you report it, the more likely something will be done.

This is probably way off beam, but do you have central
heating........perhaps an elderly system?? If the themostat switch inside it
is arcing, it can affect the power circuits. Is the router on the same
circuit? Bit unlikely, but I speak from experience.

We do have a thermostat on the central heating - but its new ( 2 years old)
and turned off ...
Thanks for the advice though - I will look into it.
