How quaint Val lol
Aries...

We certainly didn't think it quaint at the time tho as we got hardly any
sleep that night - it was awful, Personally I would have been embarressed
to let out a room like that :(
|
Oh dear I guess that is a lesson learnt

Interesting - thanks for sharing Val.

And I'm sure Rabbit would say that the lesson IS :-

DONT TRUST THE ENGLISH. Me on the other hand, I still need more evidence.

I think that should read, don't trust bleeders of the Grockles ! ;)

It's not just the English.
Of the two Canadian B&B's used last month, I was happy with the
Toronto experience, but I'd not stay at the Montreal house again.
Nowhere near as bad as Val's "choice" but a little too weird for me.
This person also asked for full payment, not in advance, but after
arrival.
Most unusual, IMVHO, & I've used quite a number of B&B's in the last
few years.
Cheers, DC.

I used to spend half my time in B&B's through employment. The worst I think
was in Aberdeen, and the Best was when I was working in Cleveland. ( it was
a few miles up the motorway from there though) There was one where the
landlady interigated me as to why she had to make two beds up after my first
nights stay. I explained that the first bed I tried wasnt comfy so I tried
the other. She said I f i used two beds she would charge more! I ended up
sleeping on the floor as the other bed wasnt comfy enough either! Ive slept
on many a floor in B&B's over the years.

I don't distrust the English as people but I do distrust the English media
especially the EBC who will resort to (possibly) criminal activities to
mislead that majority.

Ok sorry to put untrue words into your mouth. We cannot give the Geese an
excuse for not visiting.

outside was very untidy - weeds, overgrown pots, garden tools etc all sorts
of odds and ends left lying about. There was an old gardentable complete

Home from home, eh?
Seriously, one look at that place and I would have asked for my money back
and I would have been down the road "toot sweet".
Aries...
|
I doubt very much we would have had our money back Mike as it had already
cleared the bank :( We arrived tired and too late really to find another
place at short notice :(

with empty wine bottle and burnt down candles - not looking good I thought
to myself

A young man appeared - looking very hippy like But he was very polite and
took us to an wooden shack like door at the end of the house, it appears
this part was once a shippon but had been converted for holiday guests
sometime ago. As I entered I saw to my right a room full of clutter,
clothes all over the place, washing machine and other kitchen like
appliances in a low ceilinged kitchen. Looked dreadful! My heart sank and
dreaded what we would find in the room we had booked.
The young man said to turn left and go up the flight of steep stairs to a
little landing where there were three doors leading to 3 letting rooms.
Ours was on the far left. We entered.
It was a smallish heavily beamed room - very low beams so that Tony kept
banging his head - one went across the middle of the room right over the
foot end of the twin beds that had to be ducked under all the time as there
was nowhere to sit except on the bed. It was supposed to be an ensuite room
but it was to some extent but not the way I've ever come across before. The
shower was actually standing in the bedroom - a box like affair against one
wall looking to all intents and purposes like a glass fronted clothes
cupboard! None of the furniture matched and even the bed heads were
different.
The toilet was partitioned off in one corner of the room right up against
one of the beds and the only opening windows was a floor level and heavily
barred. I immediated opened it - with great difficultly as it was stiff and
no control on how far open we could have it, either shut or fully open.
Immediately flies flew in - YUK! I drew the curtain across it to keep
anymore from coming it and opened the bedroom door to encourage the ones
that were in there to fly out.
It was clean tho and tea things were laid out on a small table but no milk
and no fridge. They brought us up a jug of milk but there was no way to
keep it fresh.
Well then the landlady appeared - not so much a lady as a hippy person who
was very much into arty things - beadwork, cross stich all sorts of stuff
like that, very pretty and clever tho.
Well we had a little rest on the beds and changed and went downstairs to
the car - this was about 4 pm - and lo and behold three people were outside
sitting at the table I described earlier, eating a full meal complete with

Oh Val what a shame Still, at least the bedding was clean
Aries...
|
LOL Clean bedding for one night = £50

bottles of wine - at that time The woman who ran the place - Chrissie, her
live in lover, and her hippy son LOL
Amazing LOL
Well trying to cut this marathon story a bit shorter, we returned from the
party about 10.30 and no one was up. They had asked us to lock the door on
our return. We crept upstairs and got ready for bed. Neither of us managed
to sleep much. It had started to rain and I had the window at floor level
wide open and could hear the continual drip slash crash of rain water
overflowing for a damaged gutter from the roof above the window. It rained
all night. Also there was dreadful smell of smoke and smoulder where they
had had a bonfire going from the evening before. Boy were my lungs sore in
the night and I developed such a bad headache that even 2 big Neurofens and
a paracetamol would not shift it.
Also Tony needs to get up often in the night. It was pitch black and each
time he disturbed me as he was always crashing his head against the beams -
one over the bed and one at the entrance to the toilet It was a nightmare.
So basically that was our experience at this B and B - next time time it
will the hotel! No more B and B's, well not in Devon LOL

What a bad experience Val !! wonder how many other people had that same joy
LOL.
You didn't mention how much this cost you and did they ask you if you had
enjoyed it ?;-)))
Aries...

What a ghastly experience, Val. That would be on my list of where to
warn against..... It's in complete contrast to two different B&B's we
stayed at in Devon,in the late 80s.. The first was annexed to a Farmhouse,
and the beds, size of room, personal wash-facilities, etc. above pass-mark.
Old-fashioned, but very clean. Breakfast had been oredered in advance. We
travelled down in pouring rain after Oxford, arrived late, tired, etc. The
over and above kind gesture was- "Oh, you look worn out. Have you eaten?
We've saved you a helping a Lamb-Pie each, and some Apple-Tart..." This at
9.00.p.m. !!Didn't want to accept any payment for that... we had to insist.
Other place was over a Tea-room.. We had supper out, then hit the hay, went
down to breakfast next morning... lashings of bacon, tomatoes, egg, toast
(they asked if we'd like more but we weren't usually big breakft eaters...
tea, etc. Laugh now at the cost of it....An enormous £8 each. !!!! As I
said this was back in the 80's...

Oh Val, that is such a shame. How had you 'found' and booked it? Was it
advertised or had someone recommended it to you? I know none of us like to
complain but that really does sound like it should be of a better standard!

I found it on the internet - looked lovely, and being close to my
daughter's farm it was convenient. We found out the next day from someone
who knew of it that apparently it had been a very nice B & B at one time,
but the wife had since kicked out her hubby and things must have gone
rapidly downhill since then :(
