I think that's quite poor value nowadays, although PC World is a good
place to look and feel I don't know about actually buying :-) I also doubt
Philips make it, I couldn't see any laptops on their web site.
If you have a pretty solid idea of what you want to use it for then the
following might be useful:
Scroll down and there is a laptop chooser - you put in various specs and
it comes up with some suggestions. Once you have decided what you like
then do a web search for prices.
Do make sure you go for a Centrino chipset (which will mean an Intel CPU)
- it will give you good battery life and wireless connectivity.

Does anyone on the group own one of these notebook computers - or can anyone
take a look and advise please ?
The one I have got me eye on is the Philips X53 laptop

Can you be a bit more specific about the exact Model?
Different Models & versions will have different features & different
Software included.
& where are you thinking of buying it?
Direct from Philips?
Or from a Philips Reseller's WebSite?
Or from a Retail Shop?
& if so, which Shop?

any comments - criticisims - advice would be greatly apprecialed - and I
wonder - Can I use a standard mouse with this or does it have to me the
keypad type of thinggy ?
pmj...
|
Yep.
You can use pretty much any (USB) Mouse with any normal, modern laptop.
|
Would it come with MS word or would I need to but that as an extra ?
pmj...
|
Unlikely.
Though it's *possible* [*1]

It (the M$ Office Suite &/or M$ Word) may be offered as an Option,
when you buy it (depending on who/where you buy it from.)
But many PCs these days *do* actually come with M$ *Works*, or the
M$ *Works* Suite (rather than Office) Pre-Installed (or it's available
as an Option, Pre-Installed) & M$ *Works* *does* include M$ Word.
Bu tanyway, there are other Word Processor Programs you can get (some
of them, such as Open Office, are Free) & they will Open up (& Save)
M$ Word Documents OK.

Would I be able to connect it to my HP lazer jet printed ?
pmj...
|
Yep.
But you will have to Install the Drivers for it.
WinXP has a lot of Drivers already built-in, so you may be able to use
them - if it doesn't have the right ones for your particular Printer,
then you can Install them yourself - either from the CD that came with
the Printer, or Download them from the HP WebSite.

Being as I dont know anything about computers - especailly megga gig's or

Don't worry too much about all that!
Almost *any* Computer you can buy, these days (even the very cheapest
ones) will have plenty enough RAM & Hard Disk Space to do all the
normal things most people want to do.
It's only if you want to do a lot of Processor/Graphics & or Disk
Intensive stuff such as Video Editing etc, that you will find you
need more than what a basic one comes with.

bite's of Ram's ... I thought I wouls ask the experts that browse within
this news group !!

Seems this model has 1024 MB Ram
80 GB Hard Drive
Enough I would have thought ?
But - it only has a 12.1" Widescreen Display. That wouldn't be big enough
for me. - I'd be looking for a 15.4" screen.

I'm pleased that I got a 15.4" widescreen as I quite often use two
progs side by side, which would be nigh on impossible on a smaller
screen.

|
Good point!!!
But even with a 15.4 Inch Screen, many of them actually still have
a (relatively) Low Resolution.
What is the actual Resolution of the 15.4 Inch Screen on yours?
The other day I saw a Laptop (a Toshiba Qosmio) which had an
absolutely *massive* Screen on it! - It was at least 17 Inches
Diagonal (maybe even 19 Inches?) & it had a Resolution of
1920 x 1200!!!
Now *that* amount of Screen Space is worth having! - Very useful!
:-)
But it makes the term "Laptop" a bit (or lot!) of a misnomer.
:-(

I'm also looking at laptops at the moment BTW.

Thanks for your help

Think about a laptop top, think what is Valuable to You?
Weight? Battery life? Reliability? Build quality?
These are all much more important angles to start from.
Most business laptops live great lives with 512mb RAM, but if you
have cash to spare have a second 512mb RAM installed. It will more
than double the ability as it allows the laptop to run in a much fast
mode. It only does this if there is a Pair of RAM strips.
The Dual Core T2300 CPU is a good blend of powersaving V processing
power.
The HP equiv model has a naff keyboard and a very iffy screen
quality. The 3000 N100 model TY06UUK is excellent. There are plenty
of deals out there where they will bundle your fav version of XP and
Office with it.
Do go and see and play with before you buy. Remember that a lot of
fancy laptops are aimed at Multimedia users at home. Business aimed
machines tend to have longer battery life. Some as little as 1hr 50
mins per charge. Then 6 hours of recharging. Not a lot of use to most
folk. 4 hours battery life is thought of as good for a laptop.
Replacement batteries are often over 100 quid a go. Think before you
are dazzled by the plastic case too. Not all plastic is the same.
Some even has metal underneath it. Do you need robust design?
