Jackie...
I thought Sygate was going to finish the free firewall, is that so??mine is

pmj...
Yes.
They are stopping (or have stopped) *Supplying* it....

still running o.k.up to now!!

pmj...
Yes!
It will do!
:-)

& it will keep Running!

You have already Downloaded it & Installed it, haven't you?
So, of course it will work OK - It isn't a Time Limited or Trial
Version that you have.

It's only that they are no longer making it available for Download.
(& maybe they are Stopping Support for it (if they ever did offer
Support for the Free Version) , but who actually uses Sygate's Support
Services?)
& they won't be offering Updates for it.
But most of the Free Firewalls that are around have already been
around long enough for the Bugs & any Vulnerabilities in them to be
sorted out.

If you already have it & it's working for you OK, then you can
continue to use it. Fine.
:-)

jackie...
I am setting-up a new laptop for a friend, what firewall would you recommend

pmj...
It's difficult for me to recommend a particular Make/Brand of
something as important as a Firewall for a PC, for someone who
I don't know & I don't know what they expect from it & what they
want to do with their PC & how they use it...

jackie...
Thank you pmj I will go with Sygate as it is the one I like, my friend is
very local to me so I can sort her out!!!!

You will get different answers from different people (usually,
most people will always recommend the one that they happen to
use themselves, which may or may not actually be the best
(or most appropriate) one for them)! [*1]

I know ZoneAlarm is often recommended by (& for) people, as being
"easy to use".

But in my opinion that shouldn't be the prime consideration when
choosing a Firewall.

Far too many Firewalls (ZoneAlarm, both the Free & paid for Versions
& things like the Commercial ones such as Norton & McAfee included)
decide for themselves what stuff is allowed (so as not to "trouble
the User with too many Prompts"), but then that means that some stuff
is allowed that shouldn't be.

& then, when the Firewall can't decide, (cos no Firewall can know
straight out of the box, what, exactly, the uses it's going to be
put to are) it *still* has to Pop up an Alert & expect the User to
decide, so what matters then is what Information it gives & how that
Information is presented & what Control the User has over the decision
& how to Set things up so that they don't have to keep making the
Decisions.

Any Firewall is only ever as good as the "Rules" that are Set up in
it (either by the Manufacturer, or by the User)

& also, there will *always* be some "Fine Tuning" needing to be done -
to begin with & for a while after it's Installed, cos everybody uses
their PC in different ways & for different things

If there isn't any "fine tuning" done, then the Firewall isn't
actually Set up correctly & it isn't working as it should & it is
giving the User a "False Sense of Security", which is actually worse
than not having the proper Security, that they *thought* they had.

In many ways, I agree with what Sandra (Rabbit) says - if you are
Setting up the Laptop for/with your Friend, why not Install the
Firewall that you have (Sygate Personal)?

You do have the Download Install File Saved for it, don't you?

Sygate (Personal) is a perfectly good Firewall (even though - or
rather, which is why it is now no longer supplied as a Free Version!)
& it has the facilities to Set up proper Rules, which will Protect
the PC properly.

& since it's one that you already use, you will be *much* better
placed to Help her with any queries & probs she has with it,
won't you?
:-)

If you/she Install something else, then you will *both* have to get
to know how to Set it up & use it effectively.

Which may well be very interesting, useful & Helpful, in many ways...
But I suspect that may not be what she (& you) want to do?
:-)

[*1]
BTW - I happen to use (& have done for some time) Kerio Personal
Firewall KPF V4.2.0 (& have also used previous Versions of it
as well as several other makes) & can *highly* recommend it.
& I know quite a few other people who also use it. [*2]

So if you (or your friend) needs any Help in Installing it,
or Setting it up or sorting out any probs, you know you will always
be able to ask for Help.

It's a very effective Firewall & it's generally very easy to Set
up & it is as configurable as anybody needs.

It can be used by people who know nothing about things like that,
cos its built in "Rules" are generally OK & it Blocks anything that
it doesn't already know about unless you specifically Allow it.

& it offers a Prompt, with an opportunity to make a "Rule", so you
don't keep getting loads of annoying Prompts all the time.

Yet it can *also* be used by people who want to "get involved" with
things & have full Control over what's allowed & what's Blocked.

[*2]
It (Kerio Personal Firewall) is now handled/supplied by Sunbelt.

The Free Version is (& always has been) a *Full* & complete
Personal (Software)Firewall.
With no Time Limit.

The (30 day) Time Limit that it has is only for the "Web Filtering"
& other Features, that it offers in the Paid for Version.

The Firewall part is Fully Functional & not Time Limited.
