Saxman...
My neighbour, in my absence, was visiting my wife at ours. Upon arriving home I was
given the news that somehow the neighbour managed to pull the TV off its stand and
now it has gone AWOL.

Splodge...
Blimey, Saxman, what on earth were they up to lol
Sorry I can't give you any help with the reason for your email
Splodge

Sue...
If it was me I think I'd tell the neighbour about the tv being damaged
by their actions and see what they were prepared to do about it. It was
their fault after all, albeit an accident. Really they should offer to
pay to get it fixed, or the same amount towards a new one.

Saxman...
Two hours for an engineer + parts is going to work out at about ?75-80. It's not
worth it.

The neighbour said she looked at a vehicle in the road through the window, turned
around, caught the TV and pulled it over (it is on a stand and there's been a TV
there for years without problems). TV's are quite heavy and imbalanced. Once they
start to topple, there's no stopping them.

I know what you mean about the minefield! We went through all that last
year when our old set and video needed replacing. In the end we bought a
Toshiba 32" LCD plus Freeview and a Dvd recorder and are very pleased
with it.

Saxman...
This looks OK

Jeff Gaines...
If you do go for LCD I wouldn't mind some feedback (others may be
interested as well). I'm toying with the idea but they still seem
expensive compared to CRT.

pmj...
The price depends on the Size...

Saxman...
They are £999.99 in the local Currys! They wouldn't sell it for less, as they rely
on making more money from the repayment deals.

Jeff Gaines...
Oh well, I'll forget that!

I'll wait until they are around the £200/£300 mark, TV just isn't worth
more than that to me, in fact I may buy a monitor and DVD player with no

pmj...
You can get a 20 Inch LCD TV for that sort of price these days.

A Year (& a half) ago they cost 399 Quid.

But a bigger LCD Screen TV is still more expensive.
399 Quid will (just about) buy you a 26 Inch one now.
Anything bigger than that is over 600 Quid.

tuner and give up the TV licence.

That sounds about right. Charge the full whack so nobody can afford to pay for it
outright and then make more money from the repayments.

The Internet dealers probably make about a £100; Currys adds £250 and then maybe
make£150 on the payments? That comes to £500!

Saxman...
I got the TV yesterday.

Very, very easy to set up. Takes up a lot less room.

It finds all the free channels automatically.
Has a sound equalizer.
Picture in Picture.
Swivels on its stand.
Adjusts the picture format automatically and lots more.

Jeff Gaines...
Be interested to know how good HDMI turns out to be if/when you use it.
I've just ordered a Panasonic DVD recorder with an HDMI output.

So what kind is it then?

Saxman...
One of these. Loses marks on sound and one HDMI input.

Speakers on flat screen TVs are inferior because there's no room to accomodate them.

They can be bought for about ?760.

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
Ta - but I'll stick to my old Panasonic 28" widescreen for the moment.

Rabbit...
I've had a Samsung LCD for about six months and I love it. I was concerned
that because I was on the local cable, which being about 50 years old
doesn't produce the best of pictures that it might make them worse but in
fact it has IMHO improved the picture. I've never noticed any lag either
which seemed to be the bugbear of earlier LCDs.

If you have to buy a new set, I'd recommend looking at different makes
in showrooms and check out who's doing what deal, 'cos they vary such a
lot. Then once you know what you'd like, arm yourself with the
comparison prices you could get it for online. We preferred to buy from
a relatively local supplier but found that once they knew we'd checked
online prices some would negotiate and give us a reduction if (politely)
pushed. :-) Oh, and ask for any extras like leads, blank dvds etc to be
thrown in too. Good luck!

It was a CRT about 4 years old, but I was hoping it would last until I was ready for

Samsung have a good name nowadays - and the price is very good too :)

an LCD HDTV.

I had a look at the TV, but there is nothing that obviously indicates what is wrong
(I do have a City + Guilds in Electronic Servicing). I shall dump it today as one
can now buy a CRT TV for the same as the cost of repair.

I now have to seek an (expensive) alternative. It is not worthwhile claiming on the

Frederick Williams...
Why? Have you not considered going without? With the long warm evening
you could go for a health-giving walk instead of watching garbage on the
telly.

Saxman...
I don't watch much telly, but I do spend quite a bit of time on the computer. It's
for the family really.

I do have a replacement telly in the loft which I shall use for the time being, but
I feel a bit peeved at having to put up with a lesser telly than the one I had.

As far as exercise is concerned.

I exercise every day (about 8-9 hours per week) which includes gym, swimming,
cycling and walking.

You won't catch me watching Big Brother!

insurance. (I already have claimed for a stolen bike so far this year.

I am fairly familiar with the new technology, but it is a minefield out there.
