McAfee anti virus stuff ??

Never used anything like this before but thought I'd give it a try as my
new Dell came with a 90 day free trial.

It kept downloading stuff and telling me to reboot. It kept telling me that

Yep - The Installation that is on the PC is part of the standard
Factory Image that Dell (& other similar Manufacturers) put on the PC,
when it's made, so it is likely to be out of Date, by the time you
get the PC. So it will obviously need to be Updated (not just the
Virus Definition Databases etc, but also the Program itself).

I was at risk and I should take action. It kept doing things behind my back

Hi TH: My new Gateway came with the free McAfee trial

Glad I'm not alone John #8 :-)

I also have a new keyboard. The Gateway keyboard was
a piece of junk & thanks to my friends at Staples it was free,
As Russ posted in a reply to my usual long but interesting text,
my daughter-in-law Nora has my not so old Dell. It's a better
more powerful pc than this Gateway & to ali & pmj I don't
care, Enjoy that Dell TH. Right now I'm cooking up a long

What sort of things?

I think many people who buy Dell (& similar types of PCs) actually
*want* all that "Automatic" type stuff?
They don't really want to have to actually be involved in what goes
on - they just want "all that complicated, boring" type stuff to be
done without them havin gto think about what's what.

The new Dell seemed quite fast but not as fast as I thought it would be.
Things kept seizing up.

Got fed up and uninstalled the McAfee thingy.

PC is much faster now - the treacle has disappeared :-)

I presume you installed an alternative to McAfee though otherwise you may
find that treacle isn't bad compared to the alternatives?

I had the same problem when I used "Norton" and had one heck of
a job getting rid of it.
Never did uninstall it all until I formatted the HD, won't use that again.

to Route the relevant Connections to the correct PC - isn't any form
of & isn't to be confuzzled with any sort *Anti Virus* Utility ...

Well, yes, you have to have NAT, (basically), if you use a Router
to Connect your PC to the Internet - unless you have the PC in the
"DMZ" - DeMilitarised Zone - & then it's as if it was Connected up
directly.

But NAT is also not designed to do the job of a Firewall (which is
separate from what an Anti Virus thing does). Though NAT does (in
effect) stop access *to* your PC from the Internet, unless it has
specific Port Forwarding Rules Set up.

A Software Firewall (on the PC) is still useful, (& even necessary),
even when you are Accessing the Internet from behind a
(NAT-Enabled)Router, cos the Router does absolutely nothing to Stop or
Block any
*Outbound* Access attempts from Programs on your PC *to* the Internet,
whereas a Software Firewall can (if it's correctly Set up & isn't Set
to just allow pretty much everything, which many Firewalls are).
