I'm posting this mainly to vent some steam, but you never know, someone
may have the answer.
A client has sent me a "Movie" to put on his website.
This 'thing' was created with something called Photostory. A freeby from
Microsoft.
It's a .wmv file, has a run time of about 15 minutes and is over 25mb.
That's an obvious problem. At that size it's going to take ages to
download, it won't stream as far as I know, and I doubt anyone will wait
long enough.
OK the first problem I had was actually seeing it. Nothing I have on the
Mac will play it. None of the video tools I have recognize it. (VLC said
I was missing WVP2)
I put the cd into an XP PeeCee with WMP9 and it wanted to go off and
ferret round the net for some suitable plugins.
So I ended up at Microsoft.com and let it download and install some
codecs and the "movie" ran.
OK, so Microsoft is currently spouting on about supporting open
standards and produces a piece of software that churns out media that
can only be seen by.....well you get the picture, or not, if you don't
have XP SP2 and WMP10.
So the question is what do I do with this?
I can just ignore the whole thing and put it on the website in the sure
knowledge no-one is going to see it. But that's not right. I need to get
this into another format that will compress it a bit and Fast Start or
even stream.
I usually use ffmpegX on the Mac to do this sort of thing, but as I said
this file format isn't recognized.
Any ideas? Any windows applications that 'will' do something with it,
other than just play it?

I have used the free version in the past with reasonable results.

Convert to .mov, it's what I use to stream my movies it has reasonable
penetration into the PC market... Just make sure you embed it properly
or IE throws a hissy fit (nothing new there). Added bonus it gives a
better quality in some cases than that of WMV.
