Mike Clayton...

Mike Clayton...
There do seem to be a lot more channels available on the Freesat service
though, Wally.

Mike Clayton...
I hope not to go down that route, as you say I should be able to receive
free channels through my Sky box.
I am considering cancelling my Sky agreement. Now, does anyone know
which channels I will still be able to receive when my card becomes
'de-activated'? I am wondering if I will get more channels or less than
if I got a Freeview box.

Hope the above makes sense.

Mike Clayton...
Thank you for that. It seems that I have another option now. I'll have

Mike Clayton...
Steady on, that's dirty :-)

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6...
Well get it washed thren. ;)

Mike Clayton...
I said *almost*

Hiya Anita :-)

Mike Clayton...

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6...
Stubbed your toe? :)

Mike Clayton...
You will have to resist the temptation of having the last word or this
thread will go on forever (say Mike, perpetuating it) :-)

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6...
I'll have to w*rk on that some more. Self discipline was never my forté.
:)

Mike Clayton...
There are not many of us perfect folk about, of course we are halfway
there just because we are men.

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6...
I wondered why it was so easy, when so many others never achieve
perfection. :)

Mike Clayton...
You are far to modest FN, I am sure that like me you are almost perfect

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6...
And I'm sure that just like me, you know I am. :)

:-)

to ring Sky and see if I can take that course for less than the standard
one-off £150 as I already have the dish and the box.

Mike Clayton...
That's what I thought might be case. When we ring to cancel we'll
enquire about the freesat option.

Aries...
May I ask why you are cancelling Sky Mike?

Mike Clayton...
I have decided it's a bit of a waste of money, quite often the
programmes I like, documentaries etc are repeats. I also hope to spend
less time watching TV and more time erm........... well............
doing other stuff, writing a novel, painting a masterpiece, composing an
operetta :-)

Aries...
I see, so you don't watch any of the big sports then or movies via Sky?

Mike Clayton...
I am not much of a watcher of sport, well I would watch basketball or
volley ball I suppose. Most of the Sky movies don't appeal to me I am
afraid.

Aries...
A lot of repeats with the films too :(

MCC...
If you already have the dish and box you only pay £20 for the card - that's
the set-up we are on. With no card you won't get your local BBC1 on 101 and
you'll probably lose your local ITV on 103. Try taking your current card
out of the box - you'll get some idea of what you'd be left with. There are
other channels you would lose all together.

Grannie Annie...
Isn't the £150 for equipment and installation? You've already got the
setup. Just take the card out like Wally and Jeff suggested and see
what you are left with.
If you cancel the packages or default on payment, they just switch off
your packages... I think.
I suppose it's better to check up. I'd be interested to know for sure.

Mike Clayton...
If the one-off charge for 'Freesat' is reasonable, ie a lot less than
the equivalent of my current subscription of around £20 it might be
worth considering. There are a lot more channels available on Freesat
than Freeview.

Jeff Gaines...
Turn the Sky box off, pull your viewing card out and turn the box back on
- easier than listing them!

You may not get ITV3 and Channel 5 (I think) without a viewing card. There

[snip]

You *will* receive ITV3, but not Channels 4 and 5.

Lenie...
Not true, I get 4, 5, plus BBC3 and BBC4, and loads of other freeview
channels as well.

Lenie

aa...
Really, with a normal Sky box with the card removed or do you have
'Freesat'?

aa...
In that case you must either have Freesat, a valid Sky card or a Solus card.
The OP was asking what channels were receivable with the viewing card
*removed*. According to the BBC Reception advice site, under those
circumstances, Channels 4 and five would *not* be viewable as they are
encrypted (scroll to bottom of webpage)..

is a theory that your old viewing card will work (after you've
un-subscribed) - if not you'll need a card from Sky at a one off cost of

Mike Clayton...
Thanks for the suggestion, I may try that. I had also heard that a
'cancelled' card enabled you to continue to decode some channels. I gues
that experimentation is the way forward.

around £20.

Mike Clayton...

Wally...
You shouldn't have to pay them anything Mike, my daughter discontinued
her Sky subscription and carried on with the free channels at no cost to
her.

If you do go down the freeview box road a box will cost about £25 and an
arial that will receive digital costs about £15 from Wicks, a lot less than
£150.
Blimey, it gets complicated doesn't it.

aa...
It does a bit, but basically it boils down to a choice of getting Freesat or
a Solus card (which as far as I know are still available) and you can then
get all the worthwhile tv channels on Freeview plus a decent selection of
radio stations too.
