Your John from 1889 can be found on the 1891 census on here and with
the surname spelt correctly too.
BunnyHare...
|
Yep so we know he was born :-)
According to Mum he went to Canada under some sort of Government scheme
after WW1 - free passage she thinks but she doesn't know whereabouts he went

What software programme do you use to record your info?
BunnyHare...
|
I have a copy of Family Tree Maker 200 (came free with The Inependent) but
either it is not working properly or I have done something wrong because,
for instance, when I list my children it only shows one of them. So I use
jamps...
|
I also have the updated version of FTM 2006 and am having similar trouble.
I entered my father, mother and all children correctly but now find that my
father is showing alone and my mother is with all the children separately -
makes it look as though we didn't have a father! :-(
Is there somewhere where I should click 'Save'?
Gareth...
|
Hmmm! The programme saves itself automatically so you don't have to
worry about that.
jamps...
|
Ah! that's solved that then - I get so used to 'saving' that I thought I
was doing something wrong.
|
Is it possible for you to email me screenshots?
jamps...
|
Too late - I've entered the names again & 'merged' so it looks as though it
is OK now.
Gareth...
|
Click on the icon "Index of Individulas" just to make sure you haven't
got them in there twice.
jamps...
|
Oops! I'm in that list twice. :-) How do I delete myself?
and.....
Gareth...
|
No, you didn't 'delete' your name where you had it in twice, you
'merged' the two occurences.
Have a glance through your list of individuals and make sure that
others are not duplicated, if they are follow the same procedure as
above.
|
How do I add a second wife for my grandfather?
|
|
|
|
|
paper and pencil
Gareth...
|
Ooooerrr! You must have done something wrong or don't know how to use
it properly. :-) Unless there's a bug in the system!
When you are on the 'Family Page' showing you at the top right and your
husband at the top left, your children should all be listed below.
BunnyHare...
|
Ah yes they are in there but if I then show a family/pedigree tree it only
shows the eldest
Gareth...
|
Ah, that's because you are not understanding how a 'pedigree chart'
works. :-)
A 'pedigree' can only show the *ancestors* of one individual. It shows
his/her parents, then the parent's parents and so on.
What you are looking at there is what is known as an 'Ahnentafel'
report (literally meaning Ancestor table) or the Sosa-Stradonitz
System.
You are number 1
Your father is number 2 and your mother is number 3
Your father's father is number 4 and his wife is number 5
Your mother's father is number 6 and his wife is number 7
...and so on.
See if this will help you.
BunnyHare...
|
right so I understand now. Back to the paper, pencil and ruler I think
Gareth...
|
If you want to see 'all' of the children, go to your oldest ancestor in
your tree on the family view.
Click the 'Tree Charts' button, then "Descendant Tree Standard"
Now you'll see your people's names inside little black boxes.
Click the word 'Format' then 'Box, Line & Border Styles'.
BunnyHare...
|
hmm can't find a Tree Charts Button nor Descendant Tree Standard, just
Family view or Pedigree View or standard Pedigree
Maybe just me being thick
biggeordie...
|
PS
Try under View - Tree Charts a list should slide out giving you
alternatives.
|
biggeordie...
|
The Tree Charts button is next to the Web Search Resources button on my
toolbar.
BunnyHare...
|
Hmm, expect because mine is a free version they didn't include it
biggeordie...
|
That's a pity, as I've just followed Gareth's instructions and altered
the colours.
BunnyHare...
|
I can alter the colours ok on the standard pedigree view but that still
doesn't show what I expect it to show
biggeordie...
|
Gareth has dinner guests tonight so it will probably be tomorrow before
he is back in here to read the posts.
Hopefully he will come up with a solution.
Barb...
|
Not urgent anyway because I think I prefer my pencil paper and ruler so that
I can see what I am doing
|
|
|

Gareth...
|
Did you not get my email that I sent at 10.55am Sunday morning?
Sent to your LineOne.net addy.

View - Tree Charts.
BunnyHare...
|
|
Under the 'Boxes' tab, you'll see 'Females' is selected (top left), now
over on the right click the drop-down arrow for 'Outline' and select
the RED colour.
At the bottom of that Styles box where it shows 'Box Style, click the
third square button from the left.
Now click on Males (top left). Where it says 'Outline' find the BLUE
colur and click the second square box from the left at the bottom.
Now click on 'Unknown Gender' (top left). Where it says 'Outline' find
the MAGENTA colour and click the 4th box from the left - Now click on
OK.
Does that look better?
If so, you have to do that with 'each' and 'every' tree if you want
them with the same colour scheme and style.
jamps...
|
That's another bit of help.
I have all the children's names from all my ancesters and, as I'm doing a
One Name Study, I want all the names of the children so I can show the
'pecking order'.
~~Linda~~...
|
Ah yes, that helps me too, was trying to do similar this afternoon.
Er, bit of a celebration here tonight as I think I've found (and hopefully
Gareth has followed in my footsteps and found same person) another lost bit
of the puzzle. Going to order a marriage certificate, ooh tis quite
jamps...
|
'Tis indeed!
I'm absolutley stuck now (have been for about 12 months) :-(
I have almost given up trying to go back any further 'cos I've failed to the
ancesters of my Grandfatherx5 born in 1698.
|
exciting isn't it?

Gareth...
|
Oh heck... I presume you mean v2005?
Do you have a CD Burner?
BunnyHare...
|
Whoops - no 2006
Yes I do have a CD burner
Gareth...
|
Oh! you've already got v.2006
Open your proggie, click on 'Help' > 'Check for Updates' and it should
update it to the latest version.
Let me know if it doesn't work.
BunnyHare...
|
says "your program is up to date"
Gareth...
|
Hmmm! Perhaps yours was a 'free' version they may have disabled that
function from yours. :/
I'll email you.
|
|
see here...
|
|
|
|
|
Did you use that free search that was available last week on Ancestry?
BunnyHare...
|
Yep but all I found was a scullion who went back and forth across the
Atlantic. Same year of birth but not necessarily same month
Plus this is getting a bit off the beaten track as I didn't intend going up
side shoots :-)) Only really intended to do the straight route - parents,
gparents, gg etc Trouble is you look along the side shoots and something
looks interesting and before you know it, that is another hour or two
searching
