DH has an envelope mailed from the UK.
He needs to decipher the scribbled return address.
I've figured out most of it, except the number after
"Hampstead, London. It looks like: ?W3 1BP
(I *think* it's Hampstead; could be Humpstead or Hompstead.)
Can anyone confirm and fill in the missing number?
East Heath Road is also part of the address.
At least that's what it looks like.
Is Hampstead a county or what, in London?

It is indeed Hampstead, London NW3 Joy - see map link here

Boy, that was fast! LOL It took only a little over 6 minutes
to get a reply. Wow! What service! :)
Thank you, Val. Yes, I can now that the scribbled letter is an N.
Thanks for the map. I guess that the green area is a big park, no?

So, London is divided into areas called what? Counties?

Boroughs (like in New York City) and other things.
Hampstead is famous for liberal thinkers.
|
DH is duly impressed with the quick reply. (g)
(He was searching all over the Net.)
But I'm not surprised. I knew I had an "in" in the UK. :)
Thanks again, Val. I'm sending the URL to DH who is
working on his laptop across the room.
He just found a map which calls the park Hempstead Heath.
The park seems to be over a mile long and half a mile wide.
BTW, we have a city in Long Island, NY, called "Hempstead".

Here's some more info about Hampstead Heath
BTW I used to live nearby in my own little pad before I married Tony -
happy memories :)

What a beautiful spot! Thank you.
Nice place to live. Happy memories of your youth? :)
I've bookmarked the website for future reference.
I've always read about the Heath in books but never
truly understood what it was. We don't use that
word much here. At least *I* don't. :)

Me too :-) NW5 - Nice flat overlooking Parliament Hill Fields - early 70's.
My bright yellow VW Beetle parked outside :-)

you're obviously a lot younger than I am then :)
Troy's Human...

I don't think so. What makes you think that ?

|
you said you were a toddler in the 1950s ?

Happy days indeed.

I belonged to a youth club and we used to compete against other clubs in
athletics. All held at Parliament Hill Fields - those were the days! But
they took place in the late 40s early 50s :)

Funny, TH, how we relate certain periods in our life to the
cars we owned. I remember my favorite car, owned in my
youth... a 1954 Ford convertible, light blue with a white boot.
I used to drive around with the top down and the heat on. :)
That was in the late '50s, when I met DH.
His car wasn't quite as exciting, but he had a nice new boat. (g)

I was just little toddler in a Cotswold hamlet in them days :-)

That big green area is indeed called Hampstead Heath, Sea :)
London has boroughs not counties :)
~~seadancer~~...
|
Thanks, Anita. Interesting about the boroughs.
We use the word counties for the areas into which our
state (NY) is divided. But New York City is unusual in that
it is divided into counties called boroughs. For example,
Brooklyn (in NY City) is also known as Kings County,
even though its a borough. This is one of the few times
when a county is smaller than a city. Usually we have
many cities within our counties. But New York City has
boroughs (counties) within it, just like London.
The boroughs are: Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Bronx,
and Staten Island. What is each of London's boroughs called?
Frederick Williams...
|
Hampstead Heath is in the Boroughs of Brent and Barnet.
|
Is Hampstead Heath considered a park?
Anita...
|
It is a very large green space - and has always been called a heath and to
my knowledge has never been considered a park. It is great there - used to
go there a lot in my younger days :)
Sea go here to see all the boroughs in London :
Have fun :)

Thanks, Anita, I've bookmarked the link.
Yes, I am having fun, although I really should be changing
the sheets on the bed. (g) It must have been fun to go to
the Heath. From the photos I can see that it's a beautiful
place and serves much the same purpose as our parks.
Do you live near the Heath?
Anita...
|
We must be about 30 minutes away from there by road, Sea.
Yes, I used to belong to a youth club (in my long ago youth), and we used to
meet up with other clubs once or twice a month on the heath. Just an
informal get together arranged between the club members themselves.
It was great and I am still in contact with many from those days.
