The good news is that about a month ago we were issued with passes for
free bus travel.
May...
The bad news is that from the 4th June our only bus service to get
into Town is to be axed!

Bummer! Isn't there some sort of authority to which you can appeal? It
will probably mean real difficulties for some to lose the service.

Oh! what a blow! can nothing be done about it?

Typical innit? :(
Our bus/tram passes have been free for some time, and available to the over
60s. At 65 seems like I've forgotten about it - must get one I suppose. I

Oh dear, that's not good,
Guess it's too late to start a petition

went to town on the Supertram on Tuesday,
know from the destination indicator it would appear it doesn't go all the
way, but aside from that, I asked for a return ticket. The conductor
advised me that it's cheaper to get two singles. £2-70 return, £1-20
single. Doesn't make sense to me.

Much the same with train tickets nowadays, you are often cheaper booking two
singles or even four singles i.e a single to some station on the route to
where you are going and a single from that station. It's a minefield to
plough through on most routes now.

Just looked at that And it appears that those aged over 60 can, in fact
travel for free, on bus and tram. See

Some confusion here, Stagecoach Supertram don't issue return tickets!
Your £2.70 would have bought you a "Dayrider", which is available all
day for as many trips as you want to make.
(Ideal for the Tram-Spotter wanting to ride the whole system, just for
fun........)
Normal single fares range from £1.20 to £.80, depending on the length
of journey.
It doesn't seem that seniors travel free on Supertram, there is a 40p,
single journey flat fare for holders of South Yorkshire Concessionary
Passes.

I asked him for a return, David, and I'm just reporting what he told me.

Morning Ken, nice to see you posting in here :)

As a Lincolnshire lass living in exile and with a mum who still lives
there I know what the transport situation can be like in the rural
areas.
Ah for the good old days before Mr Beeching took away the railway lines
too

No mention of a Dayrider by him, and as someone who uses the tram about
only once a year I haven't bothered to research it myself. However I have
a couple of friends who have Bus/Tram passes, one aged 69 the other 84 and
both tell me that they don't pay, and getting the pass is also free now. I
think it used to cost a fiver to get one a few years ago.

I'm currently in correspondence with one of the local bus companies. When
SWMBO's sister was here on holiday the pair of them went to Truro by bus,
both using their passes. Several other 'senior citizen' passengers also got
on the bus at the same stop. None of them were issued with tickets by the
driver who, when asked, just shrugged his shoulders in a couldn't care less
attitude.
I have written to the bus firm asking them how they claim the fares from
the County Council for passengers for whom they haven't issued a ticket and
how they know how many people used a certain service when the time comes to
decide on whether to keep it running or not.
Watch this space!

We used our free bus pass the other day Mike, just to try it out, Ted
enjoyed it
as he could see more all around than when he is driving.
We were all issued with tickets.

Well, they got tickets on the way back marked "card holder"

Ah, that would be because it wasn't profitable enough. Arriva made £3m less
profit last year than the previous year, down to £123.1m, and what with
rising fuel prices and that, well you can't expect them to run services
that aren't making them lots of money can you? Of course the council could
have upped the subsidies that they give these companies to run the
services, but that would have meant a substantial increase in council tax.
I'm afraid there's no such thing as a public transport network in this
country. Oh, it's paid for using public funds but when it comes to the

We have always had free travel passes here in London, Mike - when I have
used the bus (which is not very often) , I am never issued with a
ticked - the driver just presses a button and that is the finish.

running of the service it's definitely run for the benefit of shareholders
over the public who actually need it.

That is very bad , what a shame!! you will have to start getting people
together and put your views
to your bus service. We have done that and got buses back, not me personally
cos i am very lucky
got plenty of buses and am enjoying the free bus pass ;-))
