Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
Just received this data from Plusnet - Looks good to me: :)

Ponder...
"All usage allowances and network management policies will remain the
same."

I'll stay where I am thanks ;)

As you can see that's a pretty consistent rate and my limit is 75GB,

pmj...
LOL!
:-)

which I never even get close to, for £34.99/month :)

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
Here's mine:

Downstream 1853 Kbps (231.6 KB/sec) 2001 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 239 Kbps (29.9 KB/sec) 258 Kbps (inc. overheads)

And that's been pretty consistent for some time now. I pay £15-99 per

pmj...
But that's an *instantaneous* (snapshot) reading, isn't it?

Do you have anything on your PC that Monitors the *actual* Download
Speed, over a period of time doing actual Downloads, like Colin's
Pic showed?

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
Nope, 'fraid not. Is there a free one available? :)

pmj...
Yep.
There are loads.

& WinXP even comes with several.

Look at the "Networking" Tab in Task manager.
Or look at the "Performance Monitor"...

Control Panel (or Start Menu)>Administrative Tools>Performance

or...

Start>Run perfmon [OK]

pmj...

Add a "New Counter Set" - CTRL+E (or remove any existing ones,
if you want)
& then Add a New Counter - CTRL+I
You can also use the Icons on the ToolBar to do those things.

In the "Add Counters" Dialog Box, look in the Drop Down List labelled
"Performance Object" for the type of thing you want to Monitor & then
Select the particular Counter from the List below.

There's an [Explain] Button, which gives a bit of Info about each
Counter.

If you're looking to see the Speed of your Internet Connection,
start looking at the "Network Interface" Counters & then pick things
such as "Bytes received per Second" & "Bytes Sent per Second"

Pick the Interface that you want to Monitor (if you have more than
one on your Machine) & then Click [OK]

You can adjust the Appearance (& Scale etc,) of it & also the
Frequency that it updates.

You can also use perfmon to Log the stuff to a File, so you can
see the Performance over a (longer) period of time.

Perfmon has *loads* of Counters, for all sorts of things that happen
on the Machine, so it will look a bit Confuzzling at first!

But so long as you pick the right Counter, then you can see whatever
you want.

If you use a 3rd Party Utility, then they basically use the same
Info (that WinXP generates), but show it in their own Graphical User
Interface.

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
That's very confusing. I can only find a graphical presentation, but
would prefer a digital one. Did a web-search and could only finfd something

pmj...
LOL!
:-)

I presumed (wrongly, perhaps?) that a Graphical Output would be more
readable or more use...

But Perfmon also shows the actual Values, as well as the Values
Plotted as a Graph, over Time.

If you want a Record (Listing) of the actual Values, then you can
use the "Performance Logs & Alerts" thingy, to Save them in a File,
so you can then Load them up & look at them. Look at the "Counter
Logs" Section & Add a New Counter

called Dumeter, but it isn't freeware:

pmj...
I haven't had any experience of that one.
But I know that there's a Utility called DUNMeter, available
from Magenta Systems...

That was originally designed for DUN (Dial Up Networking) Connections,
but you may well be able to use it with an ADSL (or Cable?) Modem
Connection, or perhaps with a Router.

BTW - If you use a Router, most Routers have (in their Admin Pages)
some Sections that will show you the actual Throughput & some can
Save that Output to a File.

There's also a Utility that PC Mag (ZDNet) did, called NetPerSec

That shows the Info you want, but I think you now have to Register
with ZDNet to Download most of their Utilities - they have quite
a few useful Utilities.

Anyway...
That NirSoft.net Utility Site I mentioned *also* has a (*Free*!)
Utility that will show you the actual Figures for the Download
Speed etc, of your Internet Connection...

AdapterWatch v1.01 - Display information about your network adapters

pmj...

Download that (& UnZip it, then Run it) - it shows a whole load
of Info about *all* of the various Network Interfaces (Adaptors)
on your Machine.

Look on the first Tab (Network Adaptors) & look for the Entries
"Received Data", "Sent Data" & "Calculated Speed of Received Data"
& "Calculated Speed of Sent data".

You can Set it to show the Values in Bytes or KiloBytes.
You can Set the Auto ReFresh Speed (& also whether it Auto ReFreshes

pmj...

or not)

You can (Select &) Save Items from the Listing & also save an HTML
Report of them (or all Items).

I don't *think* it will Save them as a Plain Text File, but if it
doesn't, you could always Copy & Paste from the HTML Output, into
something like WordPad, or Notepad, so as to Preserve the Columns
(Fields) of Data.

It *appears* as if Saving the Output only saves the *Current* Values?
Rather than Recording/Listing the "Historical" Data (over a period
of time).

month for 2GB data download which if I exceed the limit - only done it once
so far they bung on another £1-25 for each additional GB - so I'm quite
happy with that too.

pmj...
Yep.
I'm sure that for the vast majority of people something around
2 or 3 GB is plenty enough for their Data Transfer requirements
for a month.
But *some* people do use more.

Incidentally, the Telewest Cable Modem Service *still* has no
Bandwidth/Data Transfer Limits or Caps at all!

& it (the one that I'm on) runs at a consistent & steady 490(!)
KiloBytes per Second Download Speed.

It can peak at just over 500 Kilo Bytes per Second & sometimes only does
about 475 Kilo Bytes per Second.

However, I find that many Servers (or the Routes from the Server)
don't actually Run at that Speed, so the ultimate Download Speed
depends on the particular Server that you're Downloading from,
rather than the Connection Speed that we have available.

Ponder...
I did 3GB in 45 mins this mourning ;)

pmj...
Which would take this Cable Modem Whooosher Connection (of "only"
4mbps) about 104 Minutes (1 Hour & 44 Minutes) to Download.

& would take FN (on his 2mbps ADSL Connection) about 3 & 1/2
or 4 Hours?

BTW, what is the *UpLoad* Speed that you get with a 10mbps NTL
Cable Modem Connection?

Ponder...
512 :)

pmj...
Hmmm...

So that means that (10mbps) NTL Tariff is about 35 Quid(?) for:

10mbps (~= 1.1 MBytes/Sec - 1,178 KBytes/Sec) Download
512 kbps (~= 55 KBytes/Sec) Upload
75 GB/Month Cap/Limit

& the Telewest/Blueyonder (4mbps) Tariff is 25 Quid for:

4mbps (~= .5 MBytes/Sec - 500 KByte/Sec) Download
384 kbps (~= 40 KBytes/Sec) Upload
No Cap/Limit

I gather Telewest also do a 10mbps Tariff, but I dunno how much that
is (also about 35 Quid a month, I think?)

I wonder what will happen, when the NTL/Telewest merger is completed?

With these 4mbps Telewest Cable Modem Connections, they
recently UpRated the Tariff to give an UpLoad Speed of 384 kbps,
which isn't bad (compared to the 256 kbps of a typical 1 or 2 mbps
ADSL Connection).

Before they did that UpGrade, we only got about 125 kbps UpLoad Speed.

datasmog...
That seems a tad expensive. I'm paying Plus Net 22 quid a month with a
100GB limit. Up to 2Mb per eon or whatever. 30-1 contention.

Ponder...
Have another look at the rate in that pic ;)

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
Perhaps I need to visit Vision Express soon then. :(

datasmog...
sorry, I don't look at pictures. Did I miss something?

Rabbit...
Just the boys having some *mine is bigger than yours* fun. Will they never

pmj...
I wondered when some one would Pop up with the following bit...

learn that size doesn't matter ??? ;-)

Ponder...
Maybe not but it sure feels good ;)

pmj...
Maybe not...

But with an Internet Connection, the *faster* the better!!!
:-)

It's what you *do* with it that matters & the faster the Connection, the
more different things you can do.
:-)

pmj...
Yes I think you must have done?
Maybe you blinked?
:-)

His (sustained) Download Speed (according to that Pic) was 1,178
*KBytes* per Second!
That's cos he's on a 10mbps NTL Cable Modem Whooo(ooo!)sher Tariff.

pmj...
LOL!
:-)

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
I only really wanted something that showed what I was downloading at, at
any one time - like you get sometimes when you are downloading software
packages. Shall look at some of those ideas you mention though.you

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
Quite good that, if you set the Auto Refresh rate to 250mS and watch the
Calculated Speed of Received Data, during running a speed check from

Rabbit...
OMG couldn't you just watch Big Brother or something equally as riveting

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
Hey!!! The first time I get 10 minutes free to have a play, and you
begrudge it me. :(

Rabbit...
See just like Big Brother, you watched it for 10 minutes and you still don't

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
It took far less than 10 minutes for me to not only decide that but to
decide what horrible people they were all trying to be. After about 20 *F*
and *S* words in the 1st minute I changed back to the footie.

Rabbit...
The only time I've seen it is if the VCR happens to be on that channel when
I'm changing tapes but you can't miss it in the press.

Jeff Gaines...
It's not getting any coverage in the Daily Telegraph, thank goodness
:-)

Rabbit...
Yeah but that's a foreign paper :-)

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
I just bypass those pages - saves me loads of time does that. Did you watch
Richard and Judy this evening? They were suggesting for George's return to

Rabbit...
Who ???:-)

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
The Dr's not about atm. Busy filming out on location I believe.

the house (parliament that is) that they should now be providing saucers of
mily and a litter tray. LOL

Rabbit...
At least his constituents know where he has been for the past couple of
weeks. Unlike me who wouldn't know my MP if he was standing beside me. Scrub
that I think it's a she but that could be my MSP or even my local
councillor, all of which are noticeable by their invisibility.

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
But surely it's up to you to make sure you know what they're up to, 'cos
no paper's gonna tell you. Well not unless he/she really c*cks summat up.

Rabbit...
Nah I know my MP ATM ain't a Lib Dem ;-)

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
Surely you don't honestly think those of a different flavour don't c*ck
things up as well?

Rabbit...
But they do seem to do it a few at a time :-)

Or have you made friends with toine now? ;)

Rabbit...
Now that ( which I presume is a typo) reminds me of Zebedee. Come to think
of it there's not a lot of difference either ;-)

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
I never realised Tone had a 'tash.
http://www.cinema.com/trailers/waytoblue/Magic_Roundabout/wallpapers/Zebedee11024x768.jpg

:)

understand it ;-)

???;-)

Plusnet it reads up to 1990 Kbps. which seems abour right. Incidentally

pmj...
Well it *is* right!!!

Cos it measures the *actual* Speed (Data Transfer Rate) of your
Connection, in Real Time, while it's DownLoading stuff.

Numion have upgraded their tests - you may want to check them out:

pmj...
Thanks - but no thanks.
:-)

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
Shame - I would have appreciated your input

pmj...
LOL!!!
:-)

I've already given you my Input, on those sort of "Download Speed
Test" Web Pages & Sites, loads of times!
:-)

I don't bother using any of those sort of "Speed Test" Sites.
I don't see the Point of using a Web Page, with a Java Applet on it,
to Download stuff from some Server Run by (or financed by) an
Advertising Firm, just to show what the Operating System already has
plenty of Counter & Timers built-in to do, just the same (& more
accurately).

If you want to know your *actual* Connection Speed, just Download
a File (or Files) from various Servers & look at the various things that
your own Operating System & Utilities) have to tell you.

http://www.numion.com/YourSpeed/

1,178 *Kilo*Bytes per Second!!!

Yep, that's pretty good, isn't?
:-)

So yours is a 10mbps connection then?
About *5 times* the 2mbps Connection that FN is paying for?

My Cable Modem Whooosher Connection (from Telewest/Blueyonder)
"only" manages about 500 KiloBytes per Second (it's a 4mbps
(Mega *bit* per Second) Connection).

Very few worries in all the years I've used them. Most of the problems
have been with the lame exchange we have here and the dodgy overhead
wires. It gets a bit windy in the Fens.

Rabbit...
Yeah *looks* good but it's dependent on your exchange being upgraded so God
and BT only knows when that'll happen to those of us not living in a city

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
;(

BunnyHare...
Yep! I can't even get the 2mb for which I am currently paying :-(

area :-(

noreen...
I haven't received that yet can't complain about that ;-)))))
