Is it right that someone living in USA can't get Classic FM via their
computer? Is it true you can only listen to it if you live in UK?

I'm sure I've heard emails read out from abroad on BBC radio progs, Classic

Shame, but..
from their website :
Why can I no longer listen to Classic FM outside of the UK?
Unfortunately, since 1st April 2006, Classic FM has been required to
restrict access to our Internet Audio Streaming to people who live in the
United Kingdom. This is happening because of a change in the way we are
allowed by the music industry to stream on the Internet. New license terms
are changing the way royalties are collected on the music being broadcast
and listeners outside of the United Kingdom will be unable to proceed to
commercial stations.

Thanks for that Boo. What I can't understand is why they Classic FM often
read out emails, and even have competition winners, from US, Europe and
Australia.

It would be nice to have a classical music station without competitions
and e-mails being read out. Something like Radio 3 without the
so-called "world music". Oh, and without the blasted presenters saying
"It's some-time-or-other, you're listening to such-and-such with me
so-and-so" every fifteen minutes. I may be listening to you, mush, but
I don't want to; I want to listen to the music.

Odd that:((((

Like Ali says, there are *lots* of ways that Websites can Restrict
Access to the stuff on them (or Serve up different stuff to different
people, from different places)
One way they can do it is for the Web Server to Read the "UserAgent: "
Identification String (& the "Accept: " & "Accept-Language: " Headers)
that the Web Browser sends in the Headers when it Requests a Web Page.
But since those can (relatively) easily be Set to whatever you want,
by using a Web Filter like "The Proxomitron", then a lot of Sites are
now using the IP Address (of the Requesting Browser) to Filter on.
IP Addresses are allocated in Blocks (Ranges) & each Block can be
matched to a given Country (or Area) as well as to a given ISP.
One way round all that sort of thing is to use a Proxy Server in the
Country where you're *supposed* (or expected) to be, when you want
to Access stuff from another Country.
But many Web Sites that are trying to exclude people from different
Countries from Accessing certain things will *also* have Lists of
known Proxy Servers & won't accept Connections from them, so it all
becomes a bit of a game of "Cat & Mouse" - people find Proxy Servers
that aren't (yet) Listed & then as soon as the Website finds them,
they Block them, so the people then have to find *different* Proxy
Servers to use.
All of this has come about over the last few years, cos of the way
that the Music (& Film) Industry has managed to get the "Content
Providers" to agree to use ever more Restricting DRM (Digital Rights/
Restrictions Management) on the stuff they supply.
& that has happened because the members of the public (who want to
access all that sort of stuff) didn't complain about it & make their
views known when it first started happening.
Everybody who warned about what was beginning to happen was told
(whenever they mentioned it) that it didn't matter & they were
making a "fuss about nothing" & unfortunately, now it *has* happened
& people are finding that it wasn't a "fuss about nothing" & they
now can't access the stuff they want to.

... and coming soon to a computer near you.
..If you aint got the right monitor, then you ain't allowed to watch it.

could access the UK web page from anywhere in the world..
Tickettyboo...

I assume it must be, though I have no idea how they would go about it,
other than maybe ip address blocks?

Tickettyboo...
|
aah yes, in that case they probably send out a signal that knobbles yer
typing if you aint in the uk. LOL would probably improve my typing, maybe
I will move to France!

I wonder then how the BBC gets round that.
pmj...
|
By not being a *Commercial* Station? - That Page specifically
mentioned the new terms applied to *Commercial* stations.
Maybe they (the BBC) have negotiated other terms with the music
Industry?
& also by not broadcasting (on the Internet) nearly so much Music
that these new Restrictions refer to?

Cliff Mitchelmore ! They just do it under the heading of Two Way Family
Favourites and no one dare argue !
