John the R-T...
Mum has at last signed up for a Sky T/V package. Can anyone tell me
why a telephone connection is required please?

Jeff Gaines...
It's a contractual requirement for the first year. I was sad enough to
read the paperwork when I was first connected and, in short, it means you
get a lower price for the service. You can pull it at the end of the first
year (don't know if they check).

Mum has all the wiring but no telephone connection ATM.
I'm still trying to expedite her return to BT. An almost impossible
task. You'd think BT would want to get her connected asap so that
they can get her cash.

Apart from what's already been said about Sky using the Phone Line
for things such as their "Interactive Services" I *think*, (though
I might be wrong), that it also uses (needs?) the Phone Line for
checking for Updates to the Software?

It may not actually *Download* the Updates via the Phone Line,
but I think it checks for Updates using the Phone Line & (in some
cases, on some of their Tariffs?) it also gets EPG (Electronic
Programme Guide Information via the Phone.

Oh yes I know exactly what you mean :-( I decided it was time to get the
phone connected in my new home ( to allow time for any snags) so I rang BT
this morning, pressed umpteen buttons, to be told they were busy and they
would call me back. They did, I gave them my new address and asked for the
phone to be reconnected ASAP. I then spent 45 minutes with the BT person
telling me that there was no BT lines and me telling her that not only was
there a BT line I knew the telephone number for it plus various other things
about the line. She kept insisting that there was no BT line and how did I
know all the stuff I was telling her. I didn't exactly like to mention that
a BT engineer doing a homer had installed a BB socket and tested the line so
I jbexed my way round that but still she insisted. I asked to speak to
whoever had the brain cell today ( OK not quite but I thought about it :-) )
and got customer relations who immediately informed me that I was right and
the phone would be active some time today. I then had to convince her that I
didn't want this phone disconnected *yet* and no I didn't want BB on the new
number *yet* I would do that through my ISP.
So I'll join the * does BT really want our custom* club. However I've just
rang the new number and it is ringing so fingers crossed I still have a

Don't bank on it. when they disconnected my phone for about 1½ hours

Rabbit...
Oh I won't :-(

earlier this afternoon whilst reconnecting my ADSL, I kept checking it by
calling from my mobile. Yes it was ringing - according to what I could hear
over my mobile, but it certainly wasn't ringing at home and there was no
dial tone. :(

Rabbit...
I did try to phone from my mobile while I was there this afternoon and it
wasn't jbexing then so I'll try and stay optimistic.
BTW are you now back on BB, why did they have to disconnect the
landline, have you had any reasonable explanation, and are you going to get a
rebate for the down time ( without prejudice of course ;-)) ?

Flyiñg Ñuñ 2°°6 +...
No-one has phoned me so there has been no explanation offered. I don't
suppose who was resposible will ever own up to the cock-up. All I can hope

Rabbit...
I reckon the guilty party was demoted to the *new phones* department this
morning ;-)

is that they have learned something from it and have taken nmeasures to
prevent it occurring in future - to me or anyone else. Naive of me or
what?

phone here later.
